It sits on two city blocks and is composed of five buildings and two greens. McDonough Hall is the academic and administrative center of the campus. The Edward Bennett Williams Law Library houses the fourth largest academic law library collection in the nation. The Eric E. Hotung Building brings all the major components of Georgetown’s international programs under one roof. The Scott K.

Ginsburg Sport & Fitness Center features a four-lane lap pool, cardio and weight training equipment, basketball and racquetball courts, as well as a café and lounge area. The Gewirz Student Center provides housing in apartment-style accommodations. While the majority of LLM students choose to live in one of the many surrounding apartment complexes, some do choose to live in Gewirz every year. Develop a speciality or explore broadly. Most focus on areas of law in which Georgetown is ranked in the top ten law schools in the nation. Georgetown Law’s LL.M. programs are open to both foreign and U.S.-educated lawyers. U.S.-educated candidates must have received a J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. Students educated outside the United States must have already completed the university portion of their legal education and received the degree required for admission to the practice of law in their country.

Admission to the bar is not required. Foreign-educated students who wish to craft their own course of study, sampling from various areas, can choose the General Studies or International Legal Studies LL.M. programs, both of which offer great flexibility. For students wishing to specialize, there are several programs available (see full listing at right). For those who want to invest in an even more cosmopolitan education, Georgetown offers exciting joint & dual degree options. And, for all foreign-educated students, Georgetown offers the highly popular LL.M.

Georgetown Law offers more options to pursue graduate legal studies than any other law school in the United States. We encourage you to explore the vast number of opportunities by either searching the wide array of subject areas offered or by the specific degree options available. Not all Certificates are compatible with all LL.M. degree programs. The LL.M. (Master of Laws) is a degree in law for individuals who have already received a first degree in law (either the J.D.

in the United States, or the equivalent from another country). LL.M. is Latin for Legum Magister, signifying Master of Laws. In Latin abbreviations, the plural form of a word is indicated by doubling the letter – hence the “LL.” is short for Laws. The word “legum” is the possessive plural form of the Latin word lex that means specific laws. When used in the plural, it signifies a specific body of laws, as opposed to the general collective concept embodied in the word “Jus,” from which the word “Juris” and our modern English word...

In the feminine, i.e., for a female student, the expression is Legum Magistra. Each year Georgetown Law enrolls approximately 550 LL.M. students from between 60 and 70 countries and over 40 U.S. states and territories amongst our thirteen different specializations. Roughly two-thirds of these students are educated outside the U.S. and the other third have a J.D.

degree from a law school in the United States. The programs with the largest number of foreign trained students are General Studies, International Business & Economic Law and International Legal Studies.
