With police having declared an unlawful assembly, many left. But those who remained grabbed chairs from a nearby public park to form a makeshift barrier, throwing objects at police on the other side.
The protests erupted following ICE immigration raids, igniting a battle between state and federal officials. Parts of Downtown Los Angeles were under a nighttime curfew on Tuesday after LA Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency to “stop the vandalism” and “to stop the looting”. The protests began on Friday after United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities conducted a series of immigration raids across the city. The next day, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to LA without California Governor Gavin Newsom’s consent. Trump ordered the deployment of 700 Marines and an additional 2,000 National Guard forces on Monday. This provoked an ongoing battle between state and federal authorities, with Newsom calling Trump’s order a “blatant abuse of power” and Mayor Bass describing the deployment as an “intentional effort to sow chaos”.
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- President Trump is calling for even more expanded deportation operations in several major cities across the country, including Los Angeles. Trump in a social media posting called on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials "to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History." The moves comes after large protests erupted in L.A. and other major cities against the Trump administration's immigration policies. So far, it's not known how exactly that will impact L.A.
But Sunday, at the president's directions, the Department of Homeland Security said it would pause most raids on farms, restaurants and hotels. At around 5:30 p.m., a small crowd was seen gathered in the intersection of Alameda Street and Aliso Street, in the area between the federal Metropolitan Detention Center and the 101 freeway.
