From BBC Tech Decoded, Lily Jamali: How AI's role in sport is growing The Oakland Ballers replaced their manager with an AI system for one game. Credit: Oakland Ballers Nearly a quarter of a century ago, the Oakland Athletics changed baseball with their ground-breaking use of data analytics. In their 2002 season, the notoriously underfunded team used statistics to find undervalued baseball players and went on to win their division. So successful was manager Billy Beane's strategy that it was memorialized in the book Moneyball and earned him a portrayal by Brad Pitt in the 2011 film adaptation. Unfortunately for fans, the Athletics left Oakland last year but the Oakland Ballers, who play in a lower league, have filled the void and are pushing boundaries of their own when it comes to... Recently, they ran an experiment and replaced their manager Aaron Miles with an AI system for one game.
During the match with the Great Falls Voyagers, the AI was allowed to pick line-ups and determine most, though not all, in-game decisions. It works by processing live game statistics, past player performance and even factors like weather conditions. It was a low-stakes game for the Ballers, who comfortably topped their league, but the match raises questions about how far we're willing to let AI go in professional sports. Already, the tech is being used to evaluate players and aid tactics in top-flight football, basketball and the NFL, while Major League Baseball will adopt automated umpires next year. In most cases the AI augments human decision-making, but early signs suggest fans may feel uncomfortable when people are taken out of the equation. Note the recent outcry over the electronic line-calling system at Wimbledon.
The Ballers won their game and the AI system appeared to make good decisions, save for a few glitches. But some fans were pretty unforgiving when things went wrong and others reportedly disliked the idea of AI replacing the manager. Paul Freedman, the Ballers' CEO, told me after the game he wouldn't be repeating the experiment but was pleased to have started a "conversation". It's perhaps an acknowledgment that AI's role in sports is growing, whether fans like it or not. Join us as we delve into the fascinating world of analytics and its impact on the NFL draft. In recent years, the NFL draft has experienced a significant shift towards data-driven decision making. Gone are the days when teams solely relied on intuition and traditional scouting methods to evaluate players. Instead, the introduction of analytics has revolutionized the way teams approach the draft process. Analytics has had a profound impact on player evaluation in the NFL draft. By leveraging data and statistical analysis, teams can now assess a player’s performance more objectively and accurately.
This allows them to make more informed decisions when it comes to drafting players who have the potential to succeed at the professional level. Analytics takes into account various factors such as player statistics, game film analysis, and even advanced metrics to determine a player’s value and potential contribution to a team. Each year, the NFL Scouting Combine attracts scouts, analysts, and fans eager to assess the next wave of football talent. This event is crucial as it provides a platform for evaluating a player's physical and mental capabilities under standardized conditions. Advanced metrics from the Combine help focus on a player's true potential, beyond the hype. By leveraging these insights, enthusiasts can better understand how a Bet365 Bonus can enhance their sports betting experience. These performance metrics are essential for building accurate predictions and informed wagers.
The NFL Scouting Combine highlights players' abilities beyond their college statistics, providing an environment where standardized tests measure speed, strength, agility, and cognitive skills. These elements are crucial for determining a player's adaptability to professional standards. A player with an impressive college career may not excel in these metrics, affecting their draft stock. By analyzing these metrics, teams can identify athletes with the potential to excel professionally, even if their college record was not stellar. This evaluation helps mitigate risks associated with drafting players based solely on college performances. The Combine also offers lesser-known talents the chance to showcase their skills alongside top-ranked prospects.
For fans and bettors, understanding these metrics is vital. It allows them to evaluate which players are likely to succeed based on factual performance indicators rather than media narratives. Integrating this knowledge into betting strategies can significantly enhance wagering outcomes and provide a competitive edge.
