You may not know this already, but one of the reasons I practice employment law is because I was fired in a terrible way when I was a legal assistant, before law school. I worked for a solo practitioner as a legal assistant, and they saved up all the things I had done "wrong" and fired me, instead of giving me feedback in real time. This happened after I insisted on getting my paycheck on time, and go figure, shortly after I was fired. All the alleged "wrongs" were extremely minor. This is retaliation, because I was fired right after insisting I get paid on time. Because I've been in that miserable situation, I want to make sure that companies conduct terminations correctly, and in a way that prevents lawsuits.

So I'll leave some best practices for employment terminations in the comments. HR folks: what are your best tips? What should you avoid? One of the main questions I get from potential law firm clients is about the cost. How much will it cost to hire your firm? The answer depends on the type of case. My firm, The Lipp Law Firm, PC, helps clients with employment law (employer and employee), business law, and civil litigation throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia (the "DMV" area).

➡️For litigation, we charge our hourly rates, which range from $400-500 depending on the attorney, and require an evergreen retainer deposit. This evergreen retainer deposit stays in our trust account throughout the representation, and either gets applied to the last bill, or returned to the client. Our litigation retainers tend to run between $5-10K.
