If you can’t find an item in the library’s catalog, NYPL provides an Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL) for materials held at libraries outside the NYPL system. In addition to Interlibrary Loan, METRO referrals provide courtesy access to many academic, school, public, and special libraries throughout New York City and Westchester County. If you aren’t sure where to start or which service will be best for you, contact the Library’s virtual reference service, ASK NYPL. This button is the virtual equivalent to a paper call slip.

Click the "Request for onsite use" button to see the list of locations where you can access your chosen item. Most offsite materials from the shared collections can be sent to the Research Center of your choice (either the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the Library for the Performing Arts, or the Schomburg Center). Materials that are stored in a particular Research Center must be used at that center, and some materials may be additionally restricted to a specific room. You will receive an automated email from researchrequests@nypl.org when you request is received, and another when it has been delivered to your selected location.

Items that are stored in the building are usually delivered on the day they are requested. For most offsite materials, requests made before 2:30 PM will be delivered the following business day.
