Chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs) are becoming an increasingly important source of public information. Despite broad concerns about the societal impacts of generative artificial intelligence (AI), its use cases are already reshaping the information environment, from media generation to incorporation into search engines. Researchers have found that users are less likely to click on web links, which might encourage them to form their own opinions, when their search yields an AI-generated summary. Research also shows that generative AI systems can themselves be persuasive and influence opinions through personalized conversation. Fred Dews, Molly Kinder, Rebecca Winthrop James S.

Sisson Chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs) are transforming how the public accesses and interacts with information. In an era where concerns about the societal implications of generative artificial intelligence (AI) loom large, these chatbots have begun to claim significant roles in various sectors, from content creation to enhancing search engines.

One notable trend is that users are now more inclined to accept AI-generated summaries instead of clicking through to traditional web links, influencing the way they form opinions and engage with information. The increasing reliance on AI for public discourse has drawn the attention and scrutiny of political groups on both sides of the aisle. Conservatives are worried about perceived ideological biases in mainstream chatbots, while liberals express concerns regarding the cozy relationship between tech giants and political figures, particularly within the Trump administration. These tensions reflect broader discussions about the role of technology in shaping societal narratives and the responsibilities that come with it. To explore these concerns in depth, we conducted a study examining seven different chatbots, including mainstream options like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, and more politically focused ones like Gab’s Arya and Truth Social’s Truth... Our aim was to ascertain whether these chatbots exhibit political bias and how they adapt to the shifting political landscapes.

Limited Evolution in Mainstream Chatbots: Despite the political climate’s volatility, mainstream chatbots have shown minimal evolution. Most notably, they maintain a left-leaning bias in their responses, contrary to expectations of a rightward shift prompted by political pressures. Emerging Conservative Alternatives: More conservative chatbots like Ariya have emerged, demonstrating successful fine-tuning to generate conservative responses. However, their performance is inconsistent, revealing challenges in maintaining a steady ideological stance. Maria del Rio-Chanona, Johanna Einsiedler
