And run it across any cloud. Watsonx is a platform by IBM for building and managing artificial intelligence (AI) applications for business use.[2] Announced on May 9, 2023, the platform provides software tools and infrastructure for companies to work with... The platform consists of three main components: watsonx.ai, a studio for training, validating, and deploying AI models; watsonx.data, a system for storing and managing data used by the models; and watsonx.governance, a toolkit to... IBM states that this client-specific data is not used to train its own models.[5] Like the Watson computer, it is named after Thomas J. Watson, IBM's founder.[1] Watsonx was revealed on May 9, 2023, at the annual Think conference of IBM as a platform that includes multiple services.[6][7] Just like Watson AI computer with the similar name, Watsonx was named after...

Watson, IBM's founder and first CEO.[1] On February 13, 2024, Anaconda partnered with IBM to embed its open-source Python packages into Watsonx.[8] Watsonx is currently used at ESPN's Fantasy Football App for managing players' performance.[9] It is also used by Italian telecommunications company Wind Tre.[10] Watsonx was used to generate editorial content around nominees during the... Unlock innovations for the AI builder through a collaborative development experience with or without code. Quickly build, run and manage gen AI applications in the hybrid cloud platform of your choice. IBM has been recognized as a Leader in the 2025 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for AI Application Development Platforms. We believe this recognition underscores our commitment to delivering trusted, enterprise-grade Al that supports developers. Your AI tools are only as productive as the technology behind them. IBM® watsonx Orchestrate® brings all your AI agents together—making them more efficient, more collaborative and easier to scale across your business.

Drive productivity across your business with orchestration that turns complexity into clarity, working with any AI agent, assistant, workflow or data—which means no rip and replace or vendor lock-in. With watsonx Orchestrate, it’s easy to build no-code or pro-code agents that tap into your business tools and data—because smart agents start with a smarter solution. Most languages use word position and sentence structure to extract meaning. For example, “The cat sat on the box,” is not the same as “The box was on the cat.” Over a long text, like a financial document or a novel, the syntax of these... Similarly, a person might be tracking variables in a piece of code or following instructions that have conditional actions. These are examples of state changes and sequential reasoning that we expect state-of-the-art artificial intelligence systems to excel at; however, the existing, cutting-edge attention mechanism within transformers — the primarily architecture used in large...

An attention mechanism allows an LLM to look back at earlier parts of a query or document and, based on its training, determine which details and words matter most; however, this mechanism alone does... It “sees” all of the input words, a.k.a. tokens, at the same time and handles them in the order that they’re presented, so researchers have developed techniques to encode position information. This is key for domains that are highly structured, like language. But the predominant position-encoding method, called rotary position encoding (RoPE), only takes into account the relative distance between tokens in a sequence and is independent of the input data. This means that, for example, words that are four positions apart, like “cat” and “box” in the example above, will all receive the same fixed mathematical rotation specific to that relative distance.

Now research led by MIT and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab has produced an encoding technique known as “PaTH Attention” that makes positional information adaptive and context-aware rather than static, as with RoPE. “Transformers enable accurate and scalable modeling of many domains, but they have these limitations vis-a-vis state tracking, a class of phenomena that is thought to underlie important capabilities that we want in our AI... So, the important question is: How can we maintain the scalability and efficiency of transformers, while enabling state tracking?” says the paper’s senior author Yoon Kim, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical... IBM’s research in AI goes back to the 1950s and includes significant milestones like the supercomputer Deep Blue defeating chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov. In 2011, IBM Watson defeated Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings in the Jeopardy! Challenge.

To find and understand the clues in the questions, Watson compared possible answers by ranking its confidence in their accuracy, and responded — all in under three seconds. Watson sparked curiosity around “machines that could think” and opened up the possibilities around how AI could be applied to business. Clients in industries ranging from financial services to retail put Watson to work to unlock new insights, drive productivity and deliver better customer experiences. Now through advancements in core Watson technologies, IBM has developed the next generation of AI products with watsonx. Accelerate responsible, transparent and explainable workflows for generative AI built on third-party platforms IBM Research started working on the grand challenge of building a computer system that could compete with champions at the game of Jeopardy!.

Just four years later in 2011, the open-domain question-answering system dubbed Watson beat the two highest ranked players in a nationally televised two-game Jeopardy! match. IBM Watson technology became available as a development platform in the cloud. The move spurred innovation and fueled a new ecosystem of entrepreneurial software application providers–ranging from start-ups and emerging, venture capital-backed businesses to established players.
