I am pleased to share that Jay Gambetta will become Director of IBM Research effective October 1, reporting to me. Research is central to IBM. It has been our compass—helping the company and our clients navigate the future of technology. Many of you know Jay as a leader in quantum computing, however, Jay understands that Research succeeds when it delivers value not only to science, but to IBM and our clients. He has shown a strong commitment to making Research a driver of impact across our business. Over the past decade, he has advanced our quantum roadmap—moving from fundamental science to real systems, software, and services that clients are already using to explore new applications.
His leadership has helped establish IBM as a leader in both the science and business of quantum while ensuring it becomes a lasting source of value for the company. Jay also understands that advancing science and commercializing technology is a team effort. He has recruited and developed talent. He works with the ecosystem of external partners: universities, governments, and enterprises, striving to ensure they get value from the relationship. He has helped build a stellar team and empowers them for success. All of these attributes will serve him well in this larger role.
