The EarlyEdU Alliance® brings together higher education faculty and policymakers to create pathways for early learning educators to get the professional development they need to help young learners reach their full potential. Free courses for in-person and online learning prepare prospective and working early childhood teachers to succeed in the classroom. Courses also support disability services coordinators and coaches. Courses combine theory and the latest research with students’ field-based learning.
If a field-based setting is not feasible, observational videos from the Media Library can serve as an alternative. An additional resource, the EarlyEdU Coaching Companion, is a video sharing and coaching platform that instructors can use to ensure students engagement in virtual communities of practice. EarlyEdU also maintains a large repository of professional development resources. Courses, the Media Library, the EarlyEdU Coaching Companion, and the professional development resources are available to all faculty affiliated with an institution of higher education who are Alliance members. The EarlyEdU Alliance’s competency-based courses in early childhood education combine theory and the latest research with students’ field-based learning. Incorporating the CEDM across early childhood coursework is a meaningful way to develop and improve teacher practice. Alliance faculty have the opportunity to contribute to enhancing existing courses and adding new ones. In-person versions, with media-rich PowerPoints for classroom use, are available for all courses. Some courses have been developed for asynchronous online delivery. Most courses consist of 15 sessions that can be adapted for semesters, quarters, or other term lengths. EarlyEdU courses engage participants in observation and reflection on teaching practices through the use of video.
Participants watch authentic examples of educators in the classroom. They also video record themselves during their own teaching, which provides a powerful opportunity to not only reflect on oneself, but also actively take part in the feedback process with the instructor and other... Video observation and analysis serves as an influential tool for enacting the Intentional Teaching Framework. Communities of Reflection and Practice (CORP) help participants learn to give effective feedback. The process incorporates strength-based observations, a connection to the assignments and readings, and suggestions for improvement. It also provides social support by bringing together participants with similar career paths and interests.
