Hku Space Wikipedia
The University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) is a private post-secondary education institution in Hong Kong. The school is a private subsidiary of the publicly-funded University of Hong Kong. The school specialises in professional education, as well as providing degree-awarding courses in partnership with overseas universities. In the early 1950s, it became apparent that there was a need for further education opportunities in Hong Kong. The findings of the Keswick Report (1952) and the Jennings-Logan Report (1953) provided recommendations to the British Hong Kong government to establish a new department aimed at providing adult-education programmes.[1] On 21 May 1957,... The department's purpose was partly to develop and run courses to meet the needs of the growing city.
These courses included library studies in response to the opening of the first library in the territory, and housing management to cope with the growing housing crises which plagued the city in the 1960s.[2] In January 1992, the department was renamed the School of Professional and Continuing Education. This change elevated its status with relation to its parent organisation, giving it financial autonomy and allowing it more freedom to make decisions for the programmes it offered. The school was reformed into a corporate structure in 1999, allowing HKU to differentiate the school's activities from public funding and to provide for more flexible and appropriate rules and procedures that are not... As of 2023, HKU SPACE operates out of many small locations spread across Hong Kong:[3] HKU SPACE also oversees a number of subsidiary educational organisations:[4]
The University of Hong Kong’s Department of Extra Mural Studies (DEMS) was established in 1956/57, the first continuing education unit in a university in the region. DEMS played a significant role in the provision of lifelong learning opportunities for the wider community. As the Vice Chancellor of HKU at the time, Sir Lindsay Ride, said in his congratulatory message to the department, “Planned aright and if given full scope, your work will touch every section of... In 1992, the Department became a School of the University and adopted its current name, the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE). In 1999, following a government decision that continuing education could not receive public funding, the School was incorporated as a University Company Limited by guarantee to ensure its operations were ring fenced from those... After 68 years of development and efforts, starting from the first cohort of only 330 students, the accumulative course enrolments surpassed 3.4 million in 2025, which is a testament to the strong support the...
From the outset, HKU SPACE has been a pioneer in Hong Kong education. First, by opening the door to continuing education for Hong Kong people in 1957. Since then, it has led the way in new courses to meet the city’s growing professional needs. These included library courses, and new courses in Housing Management, Legal Studies, Nursing, Chinese Medicine and Management. The School was the first to offer transnational education in Hong Kong by working with renowned overseas partners to provide international courses in Hong Kong. By 1964, the School was working with the University of London and offering the first full-time LLB programme.
After providing professional and continuing education for 63 years, the School’s course enrolments have reached 3 million. Courtesy of HKU Communications and Public Affairs Office HKU SPACE is delighted to announce its new strategic collaboration with King's College London (King’s), one of the world's top 40 universities according to the 2024 QS World University Rankings and among the oldest... This momentous partnership entails a Collaboration Agreement that will facilitate academic collaboration and the joint offering of King's programmes in Hong Kong. The first of these programmes will be the Master of Science in Clinical Nursing (MSc Clinical Nursing) launched in September. It also marks the first-ever collaboration between King's and an educational institution in Hong Kong, representing a significant milestone for HKU SPACE in transnational education.
The Department of Extra-Mural Studies of HKU (HKU SPACE’s predecessor) established the first law degree programme in partnership with the Unviersity of London (UoL) in 1963/64, marking a significant milestone in Hong Kong's legal... Over the years, the School and UoL have expanded their programmes to include various disciplines such as Accounting, Banking, Business, Economics, Finance, Management, Computing and Information Technology, catering to the evolving needs of society. The partnership between UoL and the School has endured for 60 years, making it the longest-standing collaboration of all of the universities that UoL has worked with around the world. In September 2009, the School became an Affiliate Centre of UoL in Hong Kong and a Recognised Teaching Centre in 2018. To further cement the relationship, a Strategic Partnership Agreement was also signed in 2018 and renewed in 2023 committing both partners to continued collaboration in the academic and professional fields. For the past decades, the School has provided a one-stop service for application and registration for admission to many undergraduate degree programmes of UoL.
These services are offered for the convenience of all Hong Kong applicants whether or not they are HKU SPACE students. 香港大學專業進修學院(英語:University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education,簡稱HKU SPACE)是隸屬於香港大學以有限擔保公司形式運行的自資教學部門。
