By Curt Devine, Casey Tolan, Audrey Ash and Kyung Lah, CNN (CNN) — Last month, Russell Vought sat in a five-star Washington, DC, hotel suite, bowing his head in prayer with two men he thought were relatives of a wealthy conservative donor. Vought, one of the key authors of Project 2025, a right-wing blueprint for a second Trump term, expected the meeting would help his think tank secure a substantial contribution. For nearly two hours, he talked candidly about his behind-the-scenes work to prepare policy for former President Donald Trump, his expansive views on presidential power, his plans to restrict pornography and immigration, and his... But the men Vought was talking to actually worked for a British journalism nonprofit and were secretly recording him the entire time. The nonprofit, the Centre for Climate Reporting, published a video of the meeting on Thursday – offering a window into the thinking of one of the top policy minds of the MAGA movement, who’s...

The nonprofit, the Centre for Climate Reporting, published a video of the meeting on Thursday – offering a window into the thinking of one of the top policy minds of the MAGA movement, who’s... Trump has publicly rejected Project 2025 as Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has sought to tie him to some of the plan’s most extreme proposals. But in private, Vought said that those disavowals were merely “graduate-level politics.” While former President Donald Trump has repeatedly, publicly distanced himself from Project 2025 — a 900-page guidebook for Trump’s second term as President — one of the document’s co-authors was caught on a hidden... Russell Vought was the director of the Office of Management and Budget during Trump’s administration, and he later ran the Center for Renewing America after Trump lost reelection. The organization played a large role in crafting Project 2025, along with several other right-wing groups.

As the policy director for the Republican National Convention last month, Vought also helped to write the new GOP platform. In short, Vought is deeply involved in developing policy for the Republican party as well as Project 2025. The UK-based Centre for Climate Reporting constructed a ruse to catch Vought spilling insider information on Project 2025, requesting a meeting between him and two journalists who misrepresented themselves as relatives of “a reclusive... During the July 24 meeting, Vought spoke candidly about the goals of Project 2025 and how much Trump had a hand in it. CNN reported: Vought said he had personally talked to Trump in recent months and received at least one personal “assignment” from him after he left office.

He noted that the former president has “been at our organization, he’s raised money for our organization, he’s blessed it … he’s very supportive of what we do.” The co-author of Project 2025, a think-tank with ties to Donald Trump, has been captured in hidden camera footage discussing the plans for a potential second term in office for the former US president. Russell Vought, a former Trump administration official, wrote a key chapter in the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 document, which has been described as a right-wing policy "wish list" for the next Republican president. On July 24, Vought met with two men he thought were relatives of a wealthy conservative donor in a plush Washington DC hotel suite. The men, however, actually worked for a British journalism non-profit, reports CNN. They were secretly recording him the whole time.

For two hours, Vought, who could be in the running for White House Chief of Staff, spoke of plans to expand presidential powers and restrict pornography and immigration. Touching on the riots and demonstrations that erupted across the US following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, Vought said the president had the ability to use the military to restore order. He added that the disruption in the wake of Floyd's death was “obviously was not about race" but "about destabilizing the Trump administration." Trump has “blessed” the organization working behind the scenes on hundreds of executive orders, should he win again. Project 2025 is a manifesto organized by The Heritage Foundation and dozens of other conservative groups that is meant to provide a framework for how Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, should reshape...
