Colorín Colorado is pleased to offer free print guides created for parents, teachers, and anyone who wants to improve the reading achievement of children. You're welcome to download and print these guides for your own use or to distribute to others. Many of these guides and toolkits were created by Colorín Colorado or our sister site Reading Rockets. The Colorin Colorado website provides resources for educators, administrators and families of English Language Learners (ELLs). It includes: Culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR) decision making is essential to providing students with diverse abilities sufficient and appropriate opportunities to learn, including students with communication disorders. CLR decision-making occurs when educators value the strengths, qualities, and funds of knowledge that diverse learners and their families bring to the teaching and learning environment. The REME CLD Literacy Teaching and Strategies Tool provides 41 instructional practices grouped within nine major categories. These practices reflect high quality teaching to successfully deliver general class core literacy instruction to English learners.

This brief is the first in a series devoted to effective practices for English learners. CSR is a set of research-based instructional strategies to improve reading comprehension and content learning. With CSR students work together in collaborative groups to read text and apply comprehension strategies to better understand science, social studies and language arts content. CSR includes methods for monitoring comprehension, engaging in student-led discussions, reviewing and synthesizing information, asking and answering questions, and taking steps to improve understanding. The English Learner (EL) Toolkit from the U.S. Department of Education helps state and local education agencies address their legal obligations regarding ELs.

The Toolkit has 10 chapters, and contains an overview, sample tools, and resources. Serving Multilingual Learners: Laws, Policies, and Regulations is a guide from Colorín Colorado that provides an accessible summary of federal laws governing multilingual learners' education. In addition, the guide describes ten common compliance issues related to the education of multilingual learners. The summary of each issue also includes strategies, actions steps, and resources for schools and districts. There are many ways that families of English language learners (ELLs) can support language and literacy at home! Colorín Colorado’s new series of 8 tips for families is available in 16 languages.

This toolkit includes background information on reaching out to Hispanic parents, four sample workshops, videos in Spanish and English, booklists, and bilingual handouts. Additions to the toolkit include a new parent workshop on helping children become successful readers and 200 children's book titles geared towards Latino families.
