This is by no means intended to be a perfect emulation of the WeatherStar 4000, the hardware that produced those wonderful blue and orange graphics you saw during the local forecast on The Weather... If you would like a much more accurate project please see the WS4000 Simulator. Instead, this project intends to create a simple to use interface with minimal configuration fuss. Some changes have been made to the screens available because either more or less forecast information is available today than was in the 90s.

Most of these changes are captured in sections below. Nostalgia. And I enjoy following the weather, especially severe storms. It's also a creative outlet for me and keeps my programming skills honed for when I need them for my day job. I've kept this open source, well commented, and made it as library-free as possible to help others interested in programming be able to jump right in and start working with the code. This document provides a high-level introduction to the WeatherStar 4000+ (ws4kp) project, a web-based weather display emulator that simulates the classic WeatherStar 4000 system.

This overview covers the system's architecture, core components, and how they work together to deliver weather information through a nostalgic television-style interface. WeatherStar 4000+ is a web application that recreates the experience of the original WeatherStar 4000 weather display system used by cable television providers. The system fetches real-time weather data from the National Weather Service and presents it through a series of rotating displays that mimic the original's visual style and functionality. The Weatherstar 4000+ project has been a lot of fun to work on. And it received a huge boost the week of May 26, 2025 when it made the front page of Hacker News, and then to other social media sites. The outpouring of nostalgia for these forecasts and visuals has been incredible to follow along with. There were so many people sharing memories of vacations, childhood, parents and grandparents and many other great things. Thank you to everyone who has become a fan of this project. Just a few weeks prior to the huge bump in traffic I added a new screen to the Weatherstar, similar to the Hourly Graph and Hourly Forecast I previously added.

This time I took the original air quality report, which is not in the Weatherstar 4000+ because the data for it is not available in the APIs I use for weather data, and re-worked... It shows the likelihood of severe weather over the next three days. The design of this new screen follows very closely with the design of the air quality display from the original Weatherstar hardware. The number of categories have been increased to match the SPC’s categories, and the color coding comes directly from the SPC generated maps which look authentic in the context of the Weatherstar. Three days are shown which takes the place of up to three cities that the air quality report would include. Some slight visualization adjustments were also added to help make the category and color linking easier to follow.

One collateral casualty of the demise of cable TV is an iconic hallmark of American television: The Weather Channel.

Those of us who rely entirely on streaming services never get to see the comforting and quaint graphics of The Weather Channel, which is a real shame. Sure, there are much more convenient ways to find information about the upcoming weather, but they lack the nostalgic charm that many of us grew up with. KellyKlarkson refused to let that experience go into the long dark night, so they created their own version of The Weather Channel. The experience provided by KellyKlarkson’s system is almost exactly the same as what you remember from The Weather Channel. A small CRT TV plays a simulated version of The Weather Channel at all times, complete with real-time information and the classic graphics for which we all have such fondness. But it doesn’t require cable or even an antenna — everything before the video signal output is all digital and created by a computer with weather data from the internet.

The computer is a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB model). It runs software called ws4kp-international, which KellyKlarkson forked from Matt Walsh’s WeatherStar 4000+ software. WeatherStar was The Weather Channel’s technology for creating and displaying those familiar weather graphics and Walsh’s project was, in essence, an emulated version of that, which pulled its data from the US government’s official... KellyKlarkson’s fork takes things international by pulling data from Open Meteo’s global weather API. It even plays music from the Weatherscan Music collection on the Internet Archive, so the simulated channel feels even more authentic. KellyKlarkson could have connected the Raspberry Pi to any display, but the only way to get a truly genuine The Weather Channel viewing experience is with a CRT.

They chose a Sony PVM, which is complete overkill for something like this, but it looks amazing. The Raspberry Pi is capable of outputting a composite video signal without any additional hardware, so the connection was straightforward. They also have it configured for a RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) stream, so any devices on the network can access the video feed.
