For a piece published on Wednesday morning, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano shared why Wilson is getting the nod for the Week 2 showdown at AT&T Stadium. "Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka have a very specific strategy for Jaxson Dart's development that includes specific benchmarks he must hit before they're convinced he's ready," Graziano explained. "They've crafted this plan based on previous experiences breaking in young quarterbacks, which include prominent success stories such as Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes." Kafka previously served as Mahomes' quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs, while Daboll was the Buffalo Bills' offensive coordinator when the Bills drafted Allen in 2018. Mahomes was able to sit behind Alex Smith as a rookie, but Allen started in Week 2 of his debut pro season. "Money usually talks in these situations," Fowler added, "and to bench Wilson after Week 1 means the Giants would have paid him more than $10M for one game.

Sensible teams don't typically do such things. And I believe the Giants are trying to be sensible here. This is a team that needs to stick to a plan, and having Dart sit and learn -- at least in the short term -- can help him. That means he’s learning the playbook, acclimating to NFL speed, spending time on the scout team, and observing Wilson as he copes with the demands of being a starting quarterback in New York.

It took the New York Giants two years GM Joe Schoen called “exhausting” to determine that Dart was the quarterback in whose hands they wanted to place the franchise’s future and in whose hands... There were thousands of man-hours invested. Grinding tape. Riding airplanes. Staying in hotels. Watching games and practices.

Gathering information from anyone and everyone who had insight into two draft classes worth of quarterback prospects. All-Star games. The Combine. Pro Days. Dinners. Private workouts.

Missed holidays and family time. Meetings upon meetings between the front office, coaching staff, and ownership to get on the same page and make the best possible decision. The Giants tried in vain a year ago to trade up in the draft for Drake Maye. They decided to pass on J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr., and Bo Nix. They fell into and out of love with Shedeur Sanders.

The entire process, one which Schoen said again and over the two years was very specific and had been developed by Daboll more than a decade earlier, finally led the Giants to trade up... 34 to No. 25 in the draft to select Dart. Schoen said it was “gratifying” for the organization “to get a guy that we’re convicted on and we like.” The New York Giants made headlines during the 2025 NFL Draft when they selected Jaxson Dart, a promising rookie quarterback out of Ole Miss. While many fans speculated he might compete for the starting job immediately, the organization has made it clear.

Dart will not be rushed.
