Giants Found Their Blueprint For Success Vs Chargers But Is It
The New York Giants’ 21-18 upset of the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday displayed the blueprint the team must follow if it’s going to win games this season. The pass rush will need to carry the Giants and hope an offense, now without star wide receiver Malik Nabers for the season, can avoid costly mistakes and do enough to grind out victories. The Giants’ vaunted front four relentlessly harassed Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert with 27 pressures in Sunday’s win. The Giants’ two sacks don’t come close to capturing the impact the pass rush had on Herbert, who was forced into numerous incompletions by pressures. Rookie outside linebacker Abdul Carter played more snaps on the edge, where his incredible speed and explosiveness were unleashed. Carter set career highs with eight pressures and five quarterback hits.
Outside linebacker Brian Burns continued to play at an All-Pro level with seven pressures, three quarterback hits and a crucial third-down sack to force a Chargers punt late in the fourth quarter. Burns got his sack on a stunt that freed him up the middle unblocked. Outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux continued a quietly productive fourth season with five pressures, two quarterback hits and a sack. Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence added two pressures and his first career interception after batting a pass at the line of scrimmage. Did Brian Daboll’s gamble on Jaxson Dart hit the bullseye or bounce out? The stakes were high at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
Brian Daboll could have waited until next week to make Jaxson Dart the New York Giants’ starter at quarterback to face the 0-3 New Orleans Saints, who have given up 90 points, on the... Instead, he decided to have Dart face the 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers, who had only given up 50 points, at home, where the boo birds were out in force last week. In principle this might temporarily silence the critics, who would be likely to cut Dart some slack. On the other hand, another desultory offensive performance might cast further doubt on the reputations of Daboll and offensive coordinator as offensive gurus. That wasn’t the only gamble. The Giants decided only to have two running backs active with injured Tyrone Tracy Jr.
out, rather than elevating Turbo Miller from the practice squad. They also brought Jude McAtamney, with one game of NFL experience, up from the practice squad to handle kicking duties rather than veteran Younghoe Koo. So what did we learn from the Giants’ gutsy, shocking, saddening 21-18 victory over the Chargers? In fairness to the Chargers, they were already missing starting right tackle Rashawn Slater and guard Mekhi Becton. When star left tackle Joe Alt went down early in the game, though, the Chargers’ offensive line began to resemble the Giants’ line from early in the 2023 season. Dexter Lawrence pressured Justin Herbert, then blocked his pass attempt, intercepted it, and returned it all the way to the Chargers’ 3-yard line.
Lawrence otherwise had another quiet day, but the same cannot be said about the edge defenders. The Giants pressured Herbert a ridiculous 27 times. They only sacked him twice, but they hit him 11 times. Herbert is a big boy and he can take it, I’m sure, but the expectation of pressure has to get to any quarterback (well, maybe not Eli Manning in the Giants’ 2011 NFC Championship... Herbert, one of the NFL’s elite QBs, still had 203 passing yards, but he only had one TD and was intercepted twice, and his 56.1% completion rate indicates that he was getting rid of... The New York Giants (1-3) picked up an upset victory over the Los Angeles Chargers (3-1) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday afternoon -- the first of their season and...
Unfortunately for the Giants, the game was overshadowed by a devastating injury to superstar wide receiver Malik Nabers, who is feared to have suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the second quarter. He was carted off and is scheduled for an MRI on Monday. Dart's play was a bit mixed. He showed flashes at times, but also appeared to lack trust in certain throws, ultimately leaving yards, first downs, and points on the board. But there was a lot to live and a lot to build on, albeit without Nabers. In the end, it was the defense -- namely, linebacker Brian Burns -- who got things done and slowed down the high-powered Chargers offense, led by quarterback Justin Herbert.
Burns' late fourth-quarter sack ultimately sealed the game for Big Blue. With the Chargers facing a third-and-9 with roughly 3:00 remaining in the game, linebacker Brian Burns came up with the clutch play: A 16-yard sack of Justin Herbert. The New York Giants earned their first victory of the 2025 season with an impressive 21-19 victory over the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers. Holding the Chargers to 19 points is no small feat. The Broncos and Chiefs, two of the best defenses in the NFL, were not able to hold them under 20 points. Yes, this was Jaxson Dart's debut as the starting quarterback for Big Blue Nation, but the defense stood up and demanded to be noticed with their play today.
Here are the three plays that led to the big victory on Sunday. After exchanging punts, the Chargers took the field looking to even up the game, still being down a touchdown, with time dwindling in the first quarter. They picked up a first down on two modest plays, and after a first down incompletion, Justin Herbert snapped the ball on the LA 45-yard line. The New York Giants are in a tough spot as a franchise right now. It appears they might have a lame-duck general manager and a head coach who is undoubtedly on the hot seat. They finished a distant fourth in the NFC East during the 2024 season, and it doesn’t appear they are close to contending in one of the toughest divisions in the league.
And yet, there is still a lot of optimism coming out of the offseason for the Giants. They signed Russell Wilson to be a veteran bridge to Jaxson Dart, their first-round pick at quarterback from Ole Miss. And while it’s unclear how much or how little Dart will play during his rookie season, the fact that he’s on the roster gives Giants fans some hope that he could be “the guy”... But that’s not the only reason why the Giants are excited about their upcoming season. They have one of the league’s best young receivers in Malik Nabers and several intriguing pieces on offense (Darius Slayton, Theo Johnson, Tyrone Tracy, etc.) However, it’s the potential of the defense that has... In a recent article by Dan Duggan of The Athletic, he wrote about the biggest observation he had during the offseason workouts for the Giants.
And his take is that it’s become increasingly apparent that the Giants could have a dominant pass rush this season. Here is a snippet of his thoughts on the unit coming out of the practices: Rookie Jaxson Dart threw and ran for a touchdown in his first NFL start while the Giants intercepted Justin Herbert twice in a 21-18 victory over the previously undefeated Chargers. The Giants picked up their first win of the season while the Chargers fell to 3-1. It didn't come without a cost, though. Wide receiver Malik Nabers left midway through the second quarter with a knee injury and did not return.
The Giants go back on the road to face the New Orleans Saints, who are 0-4 following a 31-19 loss to the Bills on Sunday. The NFC foes will meet for the third consecutive season and fourth time in five years. View photos from the Week 4 matchup between the Giants and Chargers. Here are some of the plays that mattered as Jaxson Dart and the Giants defeated the Chargers Sunday The New York Giants defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, 21-18, at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. For the first time all season, the Giants played complementary football.
The defense forced two turnovers and pressured Justin Herbert all game; the special teams were crisp, and the offense did enough with a rookie quarterback and despite an immense loss to score two touchdowns... New York scored 10 points off the two turnovers that were both taken inside the 5-yard line. The red zone offense scored twice but still had plenty of issues, including a fourth-quarter turnover on downs where Wan’Dale Robinson failed to secure a touchdown pass from Jaxson Dart. The loss of Malik Nabers is beyond devastating for the team. A profound loss that transcends just this game. Despite the injury, the Giants still found a way to defeat a formidable opponent.
I included the Omarion Hampton play below, for the Giants’ inability to fit the run consistently is becoming an annoying problem. Here are five plays, or a sequence of plays, that led to the victory. The New York Giants had just five interceptions last season, but they intercepted Justin Herbert twice, resulting in 10 points for. Herbert’s pass met the big paw of Dexter Lawrence at the end of the first quarter, and Lawrence nearly took it all the way to the house: The usual Monday Mourning for the Giants has been replaced by something they hope becomes a more frequent weekly ritual: Monday Mirth. For a team that lost its first three games this season and, going back to last season, fell short in 14 of its last 15 games, being able to look back on a 21-18...

Here is a look and what some of it meant: Constant losing creates a sense that every mistake, every missed opportunity, every play almost made is the dagger that inflicts the mortal wound. Sprinkle in a win, and the realization sets in that victories also include missed opportunities that the team is able to overcome. After all, overcoming is a big part of what the most-games-are-close NFL is all about.
