Franklin Research Center Teaching With Primary Sources Duke University
This LibGuide is designed to provide exercises in teaching and learning with primary sources.. A primary source is a document, artifact, or record that provides an unaltered first-hand account of an event or activity created by someone at or near the time the activity took place. They are the everyday pieces of work that can be used better understand the past. While primary sources of today are often electronic or digital in nature: a Word document, an email, video recording, or social media post, the overwhelming majority of primary sources are analog: hand written or... Inside each tab one will find a range of digitized primary sources from the Rubenstein Library's collections that document special topics in the history of the African Diaspora. There will be brief descriptions of the documents along with goals and key dates related to each exercise.
Lastly, a document analysis worksheet accompanies each lesson with guiding questions and assists with making observations and taking notes. Walker Africa News Service Archive Franklin Research Center Commemorates "Black Lives in Archives" This module focuses on the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the system which forced the enslavement of Africans who were transported to the western world. Enslaved Africans faced some of the most brutal treatment in human history, enduring a journey across the Atlantic Ocean that lasted anywhere between 4-10 weeks on ships with two hundred to eight hundred people... Some revolted, some took their own lives, some fell sick and died on the journey. But for those that survived, arriving in ports and trading cities in the Caribbean, South America, and the US was only the first step of the rest of their lives.
These three documents in the boxes below are a small sample of the Rubenstein Library's archives of the trade but provide an important window into understanding the legacy of the trade and the people... Follow the instructions accompanied with each document and use the Document Analysis Worksheet (located in the Analysis and Evaluation box on the left) to reflect on what you observed. Ascention Insurance Account, 1793 - (pay close attention to page 3) Context/Summary: Account detailing the value of the ship Ascention and its cargo including 52 slaves. Apparently, the ship was lost in the slaves' insurrection in 1793. Information was gathered for the purpose of collecting insurance.

Duke professor of history, the institute has also made a commitment to promote scholarship that enhances social equity, especially through research on race and ethnicity.[1] The Franklin Humanities Institute is part of a consortium of interdisciplinary research centers and institutes at Duke University. It was formerly located at the John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies at Duke, and is now located in the historic Smith Warehouse on Duke's East Campus.[1] The Franklin Humanities Institute was founded in 1999 by Cathy Davidson, then Vice Provost for interdisciplinary Studies, and Karla F.C. Holloway, former Dean of the Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2002, the institute received a three-year grant from the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation for a project entitled "Making the Humanities Central." The grant was renewed for a second three-year cycle in 2005. In Spring 2007, the FHI became the new administrative headquarters of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI), an international organization that supports interdisciplinary humanities scholarship and institution-building. Prior to moving to Duke, the CHCI was based at Harvard University. Srinivas Aravamudan was the director of the FHI before he took the position as Dean of Humanities at Duke University in 2009. Ian Baucom was the director of the FHI before he took the position of Buckner W. Clay Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia in 2014.
David Bell served as the interim director of the FHI in 2014–15. Discover how NCTE and the Library of Congress are helping educators integrate primary sources into English language arts classrooms. NCTE is engaged in work with the Library of Congress as part of the Teaching with Primary Sources Consortium to expand the use of primary sources in the teaching and learning habits of literacy... In February 2025 NCTE and the Library of Congress released Working with Primary Sources in the English Language Arts Classroom. The book draws on nonfiction texts from the Library collection to explore methods for teaching with these and other original documents and objects. NCTE and the Library also published a searchable database of more than 150 strategies for teaching with digitized primary sources from the Library collection, bringing these fascinating materials to classrooms across the country.
More than three dozen teachers lent their time and expertise to this project. Both resources are openly available to educators in ELA and other areas with an interest in embedding primary source use in education programs to deepen learner engagement, literacy, critical thinking skills, and content knowledge.
