First Impressions Of The Red Sox 5 3 Win Over The Orioles
First impressions of the Boston Red Sox’ 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles: Not enough can be said about Mookie Betts. After just missing a down-and-out fastball with the bases loaded, Betts destroyed a hanging slider from Yovani Gallardo -- a no-doubter off the bat. Then he launched a mid-90s fastball from the Orioles’ All-Star set-up man, Brad Brach, after the Red Sox bullpen coughed up the lead that he’d gotten them. Clutch performances in two pivotal at-bats, against a top-tier team. Eduardo Rodriguez was pitching like he was completely healthy making it all the more odd that he got hurt.
BOSTON — If the Orioles’ 12-3 loss to the Red Sox on Monday night was rock bottom, their performance Tuesday was a desperately needed first step in their climb back to the surface. Cedric Mullins put together his first multi-home run game since 2021 and Albert Suárez set a new career high with eight strikeouts to lead Baltimore (83-63) to a 5-3 win in Boston that snapped... Every member of the Orioles’ starting lineup recorded at least one hit including Adley Rutschman, whose two-run single in the seventh inning provided key insurance runs and, for a night, offered hope that their... Mullins, hitting in the No. 2 spot of the lineup for the second straight day, took Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford deep in each of his first two at-bats. His first homer was a high fly ball that barely drifted past the short right-field wall of Fenway Park; the 334-foot solo shot was the shortest home run of his career.
He got all of his next one, however, launching a two-run blast 407 feet to right-center field in the top of the third. The Orioles’ center fielder entered the contest hitting .286 with an .860 OPS over his past 75 games. Coming off an injury-plagued 2023 campaign, Mullins has shaken off a slow start to come within striking distance of a 20-homer, 30-stolen base season. His two long balls Tuesday pushed his season total to 17 and he swiped his 27th bag in the ninth. Sixteen games remain on their regular-season schedule. Baltimore struggled at first to tack on any insurance runs, stranding five base runners over the first six innings.
Yet Suárez made sure they wouldn’t need any, twirling six innings of one-run baseball for one of his most impressive starts of the year. The 34-year-old threw 101 pitches, a season high, with 21 of them inducing swings and misses — the most by an Orioles starter since Kyle Gibson got 22 whiffs on July 9, 2023. BOSTON–What happened? Cedric Mullins hit two home runs and Albert Suárez threw six strong innings as the Orioles moved to within ½ game of the American League East leading New York Yankees with a 5-3 win... The Orioles (83-63) broke a three-game losing streak. Suárez allowed one run on four hits in six innings, striking out a career high eight batters.
Seranthony Domínguez recorded his 10th save, ninth with the Orioles. Adley Rutschman added a two-run opposite-field single in the seventh inning after Mullins drove in the Orioles’ first three runs. It was the second game for Mullins in the No. 2 spot in the order, and he’s feeling comfortable. “Yeah, just putting quality at-bats together. I think that’s been the main focus,” Mullins said.
“Focusing on getting on base, creating some havoc on the bases and leading to some power, as well.” Saturday was a big bounce-back game for the Boston Red Sox, who had just blown an 8-2 lead after the seventh inning on Friday night, losing 12-8 to the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore did not make things easy for the Red Sox on Saturday, but behind a stellar pitching performance from Boston starter Nate Eovaldi, the tide turned the way of the Sox. Eovaldi pitched a complete game, giving up just two earned runs and striking out six as the Red Sox defeated the Orioles, 5-3 on Saturday. Boston and Baltimore were locked at 3-3 through the fifth inning after the Orioles tied the game in the top of the fifth. Once the bottom of the sixth came around, first baseman Bobby Dalbec put the Red Sox up for good, hitting a solo home run as Boston led 4-3.
The 34-year-old starter was impressive once again while the O’s offense was led by the red hot center fielder. After getting shellacked to begin the series, the Orioles bounced back in impressive fashion on Tuesday night. Led by Albert Suárez on the mound and Cedric Mullins at the plate, the O’s topped the Red Sox 5-3 at Fenway Park. The Orioles offense has had some well-documented struggles in recent months. Tonight’s performance was not their finest on the season as they went just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base. However, they did manage to reach the magic number of five runs scored, collected 10 hits, and walked four times.
All in all, an encouraging day at the office. Cedric Mullins got things started with a bang in the first inning. Batting second, the resurgent Mullins took a Kutter Crawford fastball and lifted it into the air at a ridiculous 44 degree launch angle. It traveled just 334 feet and had an expected batting average of .030. But because this game was played at Fenway Park, it still snuck inside the Pesky Pole to give the O’s an early 1-0 lead. That wasn’t all Mullins would do on this night.
The O’s center fielder must have eaten his Wheaties this morning because in the third inning he smacked his second home run of the game. This one was a no-doubter as Mullins laced a 407-foot fly ball deep into the Boston night, driving in Anthony Santander in the process. That pushed the Birds up 3-0 after three innings. BOSTON - Cedric Mullins hit two homers and drove in three runs, Albert Suárez gave up one run and struck out a career-best eight over six innings and the Baltimore Orioles held off the... Adley Rutschman added a two-run single for the Orioles, who won for the only the second time in six games as they attempt to catch the AL East-leading New York Yankees. Triston Casas and Masataka Yoshida each had an RBI double for Boston, which has lost seven of its last 11 in its pursuit of Minnesota for the AL's third wild-card spot.
Boston's Tyler O'Neill went 0 fox 3 with three strikeouts after hitting two homers in a victory on Monday. With Gunnar Henderson on first after a walk in the third, Mullins hit a cutter from Kutter Crawford (8-14) deep into the right-field seats to make it 3-0. It was his fifth career multi-homer game, the last coming against Toronto on June 19, 2021.
