Media accounts indicate that a suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination was formally charged with aggravated murder, a development reported in late September 2025 and signaling prosecution is advancing beyond initial investigative steps [1]. This charge represents a legal milestone: it moves the matter into the criminal-justice process where evidence, indictments, and pretrial procedures will be central. by KAYLA GASKINS | The National News Desk WASHINGTON (TNND) — Federal investigators are releasing new details in the case against the man accused of assassinating activist Charlie Kirk, even as thousands gathered in the nation’s capital to honor his memory. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that investigators recovered DNA evidence directly linking the suspect to the crime. Patel said DNA hits from a towel wrapped around the firearm, as well as a screwdriver retrieved at the scene, matched the individual now in custody. Authorities also uncovered evidence that a note was written before the attack. “The suspect wrote a note saying, ‘I have the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it,’” Patel revealed.

The note was reportedly left inside the home the suspect shared with a partner. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed that the suspect lived with a boyfriend who is transitioning from male to female. Cox said family members and acquaintances told investigators the accused had become “deeply indoctrinated with left-wing ideology.” OREM, UT — Behind Utah Valley University's Losee building, FBI forensics agents were still gathering evidence Sept. 11 in the wooded area where the bureau said agents recovered the "high-powered" rifle a shooter used to kill political influencer Charlie Kirk.

The Wall Street Journal and New York Times, citing law-enforcement sources, reported it was an older model Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt action rifle. An ATF spokesperson declined to comment to USA TODAY, citing the active investigation. Evidence markers on a small hill behind the building appeared to mark the trail the shooter took, scrambling through some trees towards a nearby construction site. NPR speaks with Juliette Kayyem, Harvard lecturer and former Homeland Security assistant secretary, about the current status of the FBI investigation into Charlie Kirk's killing Wednesday. Let's bring back Juliette Kayyem of Harvard University, former senior Homeland Security official, for some more insight. Welcome back to you. INSKEEP: I want to start with something that we heard from Governor Cox there that strikes me as really quite important - a way to think of this killing. He says, quote, "there is one person responsible for what happened here." One person responsible.

Why is that an important thing to say? KAYYEM: Because it focuses our attention on the individual who committed this heinous crime, Tyler Robinson, and that he is, indeed, responsible for the death of Charlie Kirk. So don't - so everyone's going to try to find some motive or reason or his parents or guns or whatever. They're - Tyler Robinson killed someone, and he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. But Governor Cox also, I really have to say, met the moment. He then, you know, took a lens back and said, this talk - of the way we talk to each other about each other online and in person is essentially the talk of eradication...

- that if I exist, you can't exist, or if you exist, then my existence is threatened. And I thought Cox just sort of really - you know, and in (ph) such an important way in this time. He was sort of - at the right moment, he said, you know, touch some grass. I mean, basically, get out there and get away from all of this because fundamentally, we're all just human beings. And that was important. Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of President Donald Trump who played an influential role in rallying young Republican voters, was shot and killed at a Utah college event in what the...

The shooter has not been found. Authorities say Kirk was killed with a single shot from a rooftop on Wednesday. Whoever fired the gun then slipped away amid the chaos of screams and students fleeing the Utah Valley University campus. The suspect, estimated to be college-age, is still at large. In a press conference, FBI and Utah DPS officials shed new light on the ongoing manhunt. FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls said authorities have viewed video recordings of the suspect.

DPS Commissioner Beau Mason said this has enabled them to trace the activities of the suspect. "We have followed his activity onto campus, through the stairwells, onto the roof, around the roof, to a point of shooting," Mason said.
