The News Media Tracker shows data on Americans’ awareness of, use of and trust in 30 different major news sources. It’s based on a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults conducted in March 2025. If you have any questions, please reach out to info@pewresearch.org. This tool is meant to be a digital product that provides the public with up-to-date, easily accessible key information about what news sources Americans turn to and trust.
In the News Media Tracker, we take a snapshot of the news sources people have heard of, use and trust for news. We examine responses based on age and party identification to map out what the media ecosystem looks like for each of these groups. We limited ourselves to 30 news sources in this survey to avoid placing undue burden on survey respondents, who may have trouble processing an even longer list. We used a variety of criteria to make difficult decisions about which sources to include among the 30. In the U.S., roughly nine-in-ten adults (93%) get at least some news online (either via mobile or desktop), and the online space has become a host for the digital homes of both legacy news... Newspapers are a critical part of the American news landscape, but they have been hard hit as more and more Americans consume news digitally. Local TV companies generated more revenue in 2022 than in 2021, consistent with a cyclical pattern in which advertising revenue rises in election years and falls in non-election years.
In 2022, both prime-time and daytime cable news audiences increased for Fox News but decreased for CNN, MSNBC and Newsmax. Financially, advertiser expenditures for the news programs of the three major networks have declined substantially since 2020. U.S. adults under 30 follow news less closely than any other age group. And they’re more likely to get (and trust) news from social media. Among TV news consumers, 57% say that their news mostly comes from cable, satellite or broadcast television.
34% say it mostly comes from streaming services. A majority of Americans who prefer to watch the news (62%) say they prefer to get it from TV, rather than another platform. About one-in-five U.S. adults say they regularly get news from news influencers on social media, and this is especially common among younger adults. Overall, 56% of U.S. adults now say they have a lot of or some trust in the information they get from national news organizations – down 11 percentage points since March 2025.
The ways Americans get news and information have transformed dramatically in the 21st century. The news habits of the youngest adults reflect this shift – and may offer some insight into what the future holds. In 2016, 51% of U.S. adults said they followed the news all or most of the time, but that share fell to 36% in 2025. Among TV news consumers, 57% say that their news mostly comes from cable, satellite or broadcast television. 34% say it mostly comes from streaming services.
Overall, 56% of U.S. adults now say they have a lot of or some trust in the information they get from national news organizations – down 11 percentage points since March 2025. Those who report often encountering inaccurate news are more likely than those who rarely or never do to say it’s hard to know what is true (59% vs. 31%). The share of Americans who say they follow the news all or most of the time has decreased since 2016, according to nearly a decade’s worth of Pew Research Center surveys. This shift comes amid changes in the platforms people use for news and declining trust in news organizations.
