fantasy analyst makes big declaration about jahmyr gibbs for 2025 draf

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs have a very nice rookie season in 2023, but it was also easy to see a path to better production this season. That happened, as he topped 1,900 yards from scrimmage with a franchise single-season record 20 touchdowns (16 rushing, four receiving). Of course Gibbs also reached a new level in fantasy football terms this season. Counting Week 18 he was the RB1 in full-point PPR, and he was a top-three running back in the most common scoring formats for the typical fantasy season (Week 1-Week 17). During playoff weeks in most leagues (Week 15-17), he was undoubtedly a "league winner." The days of being able to draft Gibbs outside the first round of a fantasy draft are over for the foreseeable future.

The case for him as the No. 1 running back in dynasty leagues was strong before this season, and it's only better now. As part of his 2024 season review of the position in fantasy football, Nic Bodiford of Pro Football Focus named Gibbs the "best performer overall" among running backs. "Gibbs proved himself as the NFL’s premier dual-threat running back in 2024, finishing as the Weeks 1-17 overall RB2. He jumps to the No. 1 overall spot when factoring in Week 18.""Among 33 running backs with at least 130 rushing attempts in Weeks 1-17, Gibbs ranked eighth in yards after contact per rushing attempt (3.4) and missed tackles...

Jahmyr Gibbs was the second-most productive points per reception (PPR) running back a season ago (21.4 PPG) and posted nine top-10 finishes. That run of greatness included four top-2 finishes in a season where Saquon Barkley was flirting with history, Derrick Henry was scoring every week, and various other options at the position were having massive... Gibbs is unique in an era of production. He jumps off the screen with seemingly every touch – does that mean he deserves to be in the 1.01 conversation this year? I write for a living, and yet, I’m already running out of superlatives for a kid who is just 23 years of age. In Gibbs’ entire lifetime, not his playing career, his time on planet Earth, there have been two running backs to post multiple seasons with at least 50 catches and 10 rushing touchdowns while averaging...

The floor/ceiling combination for him is difficult to comprehend. His worst finish, while playing a position that results in missed time throughout games due to the nature of the car crashes they take part in, was RB25. Their best player was Jahmyr Gibbs, the running back who established himself as one of the best players in the league last season. Gibbs' breakout campaign led to an incredible year in fantasy football leagues, but how will the Alabama product perform in 2025?

The Lions were first in the NFL with 33.2 points per game. Jared Goff proved that he is more than just a game manager. Amon-Ra St. Brown had a huge year as a receiver. Jameson Williams finally bucked the injury bug and his suspension issues, and tight end Sam LaPorta built off a great rookie season. The backfield was what was most special, though.

Gibbs technically wasn't the listed starter for most of the year. That honor belonged to David Montgomery, who ran for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns. Gibbs added 1,412 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. Together, the duo carried the football 435 times, so there were plenty of attempts to go around for what was one of the best backfield duos in recent memory. Gibbs was the Sonic to Montgomery's Knuckles because Gibbs provided the speed and elusiveness, whereas Montgomery was more of a power back. All in all, Gibbs finished as the No.

Jahmyr Gibbs enters the 2025 NFL season poised to build upon his impressive sophomore campaign with the Detroit Lions. The Alabama product showed tremendous growth in 2024, amassing 1,412 rushing yards on 250 carries (5.6 yards per attempt) and scoring 16 touchdowns on the ground. He complemented his rushing prowess with 52 receptions for 517 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns, demonstrating his dual-threat capabilities. The 23-year-old's 2024 performance represented significant improvement across all major statistical categories compared to his rookie season. Gibbs increased his yards per carry from 5.2 to 5.6 while more than doubling his touchdown production. His yards per reception also jumped from 6.1 to 9.9, showcasing his development as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.

Gibbs finished the 2024 season with 1,929 yards from scrimmage and 20 total touchdowns, cementing his status as one of fantasy football's elite running backs. His postseason performance further highlighted his big-play ability, as he rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns while adding 6 receptions for 70 yards in Detroit's divisional-round loss to the Commanders. For 2025, Gibbs sits at #5 in current fantasy football rankings with an average draft position of 5.4, making him a likely first-round pick in most formats. Despite sharing the backfield with David Montgomery, Gibbs established himself as the Lions' featured back late in the 2024 campaign, including the playoffs where he out-touched Montgomery 20 to 7. Fantasy managers should be encouraged by Gibbs' projected workload increase for 2025, with some outlets forecasting approximately 238 carries for 1,285 yards. His explosive play ability (including a 70-yard run in 2024) and significant role in the passing game provide him with a high weekly floor and tremendous ceiling.

While most first-round picks quickly become feature backs, that hasn’t been the case for Gibbs. He played 57% of Detroit's offensive snaps as a rookie. He surpassed 60% in six games, but three of them were when David Montgomery was inactive due to injury. By Derek Brown (FantasyPros), Thu, Aug 14th 2025, 1:02pm EDT Gibbs was awesome last year as the RB2 in fantasy points per game. The loss of David Montgomery for the final three weeks of the season helped him, but it's not like Gibbs wasn't awesome before then.

In Weeks 1-15, with David Montgomery in the lineup, Gibbs was the RB4 in fantasy points per game (18.9), averaging 16.1 touches and 103 total yards. In Weeks 16-18 (without Montgomery), Gibbs went bonkers with 32.6 fantasy points per game as he decimated opponents with 25.6 touches and 162.4 total yards per game. I'm not trying to detract from his season, but it helped. In Weeks 1-15, Gibbs still didn't hold the goal line or red zone role on the ground. During that stretch, Montgomery had 25 rushing attempts inside the five-yard line compared to 18 for Gibbs (per Fantasy Points Data). Gibbs will be efficient with whatever workload he's allotted after he ranked first in explosive run rate, fifth in missed tackles forced per attempt, and third in yards per route run.

FantasyPros® and the FantasyPros logo are registered trademarks of Marzen Media LLC Do Not Sell My Personal Information Jahmyr Gibbs has quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic all-around backs in fantasy football, blending speed, vision, and pass-catching ability for a high PPR floor. After finishing as the RB1 in PPR formats last year with the Detroit Lions, can he do it again in 2025?

Gibbs brought an explosive running style to Detroit’s offense that commanded value on all three downs. The Lions feature him on passing downs where his route running, hands, and open-field running paint a high floor, especially in PPR formats. He has questions about his ability to handle pass protection, and his game takes a step back when running in tight quarters on the interior of an offensive line. Gibbs has plus speed (4.36 40-yard dash) and electric quickness. He runs with patience and vision, setting him up for an active role in Detroit’s offense in his rookie season. Over three seasons at Alabama, covering 31 games, Gibbs gained 3,349 combined yards with 23 touchdowns and 104 catches on 483 touches.

His best success came in 2022 (151/926/7 with 44 catches for 444 yards and three touchdowns). Gibbs has a sensational three-game stretch midseason (63/463/5 plus 10 catches for 81 yards). In his rookie year, he gained 1,261 combined yards with 11 touchdowns and 52 catches on 234 touches (15.6 per week) over 15 games. Gibbs gave the fantasy market some trepidation about his 2023 value after a quiet first four games (39/179 with 14 catches for 70 yards – 9.73 FPPG), followed by two missed weeks with a...
