Eric Adams ended his struggling reelection campaign Sunday, an acknowledgment that he was no longer a credible contender after a year of scandal and political turmoil. Adams’ capitulation could potentially provide a lift to the campaign of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a fellow centrist who portrayed himself as the only candidate able to beat the Democratic Party’s nominee, state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. The mayor of New York City announced on Sunday that he’s dropping out after months of speculation over whether he could be convinced to leave the race following a scandalous first term that left... Here’s our account of how his exit went down, including reactions, commentary, and analysis. Although Adams’s reelection dreams have come to an end, the mayor’s legal fights go on. The Daily News reports Adams will continue to challenge the Campaign Finance Board’s decision to withhold millions of dollars of funds from his campaign, with his attorney writing in a filing that “campaign expenditures... This time from The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board: New York Mayor Eric Adams finally abandoned his campaign for re-election on Sunday, and the shame is he didn’t do it sooner.

He’d have given the city a better chance of defeating socialist Zohran Mamdani. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has ended his long-shot bid for a second term leading the nation's largest city. Adams’ decision to drop out of the race as a one-term mayor, announced Sept. 28, narrows the field and likely improves the chances of fellow independent candidate and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. State representative and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani upset Cuomo in June's Democratic primary in the overwhelmingly blue city.

Adams announced his departure from the race in a video address posted to X. "It has been my honor to be your mayor," he said. A 65-year-old Democratic mayor elected in 2021, Adams had been pressured to drop out of the race for months, with his administration plagued by scandal, resignations and corruption allegations. That pressure came most recently from Washington, where President Donald Trump has pushed for a one-on-one race against Mamdani, 33, who represents Queens in the New York state legislature. Without Adams, Cuomo likely gets a more favorable rematch against Mamdani in the November general election. Notably, Trump has not backed fellow Republican Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels anti-crime patrol group.

Mayor Eric Adams said he couldn’t raise money after his campaign was dogged for months by never-ending rumors and pressure about dropping out. Now that he has exited the race, some are wondering how the roughly 9 percent of the vote he had in many polls will shake up the race. NBC New York’s Melissa Russo reports. The race to be the next mayor of New York City is down to three main candidates after incumbent Eric Adams dropped his reelection bid over the weekend. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa are already looking to capitalize on Adams' exit, as the contest heads into its final stretch.

It’s hard to predict what effect Adams’ departure will have on the race, but the impact could be minimal. Adams will remain on the ballot since the deadline to withdraw his name has passed, and polls conducted in September indicated that his support among New York City voters was low. Here is a look at what the contest's latest shakeup means going forward: New York City Mayor Eric Adams bowed out of his struggling reelection campaign Sunday, but the decision may be too late to fundamentally alter the outcome of the November election to replace him. Adams' decision to withdraw, amid faltering poll numbers and a struggle to raise money, was a long-speculated outcome by donors and sought by others who hoped to boost former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's... But political analysts questioned Sunday whether the decision can make a difference with just 37 days until Election Day.

Multiple polls show Mamdani likely to win the election in November, in most cases by double digits, while Adams has consistently polled in fourth place in a four-candidate field that also includes Republican candidate... But with Adams' withdrawal, even if every voter who had planned to cast a ballot for him decided to vote for Cuomo instead, it still wouldn't be enough to overcome Mamdani's current polling advantages,... New York Mayor Eric Adams announced Sunday that he is dropping his third-party bid for re-election, narrowing the field for November’s election. “Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my re-election campaign,” Adams said in a video on X. “The constant media speculation about my future and the campaign finance board’s decision to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign.” In a nearly nine-minute video, Adams — who enjoyed strong ratings from New Yorkers early in his term but whose standing plummeted after he was indicted on federal corruption charges, which were then dropped...

The question now is how Adams’ move shapes the mayoral race going forward in the nation’s biggest city. Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is also running a third-party bid for mayor, said in a statement shared first with NBC News that he believes Adams "is sincere in putting the well-being of New York City...
