Learning to read is a complicated process. If you teach English language learners (ELLs), there are a number of ways you can support their literacy and language development through targeted instruction. This article highlights ELL instructional strategies based on the five components of reading as outlined in the report by the National Reading Panel (2000). Phonemes combine to form syllables and words. For example, the word stop has four phonemes (s-t-o-p), while shop has three phonemes (sh-o-p). Ben's magical world Ben Buchanan is, by all accounts, an amazing kid. He wrote his first book when he was only eleven years old, and just recently published his second book at the age of thirteen. It's hard to imagine what force could motivate a kid to achieve so much at such a young age. For Ben, it was learning to read. Ben Buchanan is a diagnosed dyslexic.
