Voters in races across the country backed Democrats, including in New York’s mayoral race and contests for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, rejecting President Donald Trump’s late and lightweight push for his preferred... Democrats secured another expected win in California, where voters approved a new congressional map that is designed to help their party win five more U.S. House seats in next year’s midterm elections. Though the candidates and local issues all played a role in the results, voter attitudes about the president and his agenda were central to their choices and offered the first clear review from voters... Voters headed to the polls in states across the U.S. on Tuesday — and Democrats came out victorious.

In New York City, voters elected Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state Assembly member and democratic socialist, as their next mayor. Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who joined the race as an independent after losing in the Democratic primary. Democrats also won both of the governor’s races that were on the ballot. Abigail Spanberger, a former U.S. representative, was elected in Virginia to replace outgoing Republican Glenn Youngkin.

She will become the state’s first female governor. Mikie Sherrill comfortably won the governor’s race in New Jersey, keeping the state under Democratic control. Democrats also secured what could prove to be their most important win in California, where voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50 — a ballot measure that will allow them to redraw the state’s congressional districts... Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed the initiative in response to Republican redistricting efforts in Texas and other red states. The state’s proposed new map is expected to give Democrats five additional members in the House of Representatives, which could play a big role in determining which party holds the majority after next year’s...

California voters backed Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to redraw congressional districts in favor of Democrats. It was a big night for him in his rivalry with President Donald Trump. Gavin Newsom’s measure that allowed the state to redraw its congressional map in favor of Democrats, pushing back against President Donald Trump’s effort to hold onto a Republican-controlled Congress by urging redistricting in Texas. Tuesday capped off a whirlwind, hyper-partisan two-and-a-half-month campaign for one of the most expensive ballot measures in state history. Supporters poured more than $120 million into Newsom’s committee supporting the measure. Opponents raised just $44 million.

Outside groups spent $27 million to try to sway the vote. In a triumphant speech, Newsom proclaimed that Prop. 50’s victory was not just a win for California, but a win for the entire country. He called on leaders in other Democratic-held states — Illinois, Virginia, Maryland and New York — to “meet the moment” and redraw their congressional districts, too. Proposition 50 cruised to victory on election night, handing Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and his allies a victory and setting the stage for a showdown with President Donald Trump and the national Republican Party in the 2026 midterm elections.

Proposition 50 asked California voters to temporarily replace the state’s congressional districts, drawn by a politically-independent commission, with new maps designed to elect more Democrats to the U.S. House of Representatives. The plan tosses the political maps that divvy up California’s 52 seats in the House. The Associated Press called the win for Prop. 50 at 8 p.m. as voting closed.

In local races, early returns suggested that Santa Clara County voters were on track to approve Measure A, a sales tax increase. In the county assessor’s race, Los Altos Vice Mayor Neysa Fligor had a strong lead over her competitors. Saratoga Councilmember Rishi Kumar trailed behind her, followed closely by Saratoga Councilmember Yan Zhao and East Side Union High School District Trustee Bryan Do. And early results showed well above the majority of voters approving Measure B, an East Bay parcel tax to fund equipment, facility and technology improvements in a local hospital district. Proposition 50 is projected to pass in California, according to the Associated Press. The ballot proposition, backed by Democratic Gov.

Gavin Newsom and much of his party, paves the way for California to adopt a new congressional district map that is more favorable to Democrats in the midterm elections and the two that follow. The measure is an attempt by Democrats to counteract Republican gerrymanders President Trump has sought in red states. If approved, it would change California’s congressional district boundaries to make it easier for Democrats to flip five seats now held by Republicans. Voters in California have approved Proposition 50, a ballot proposal to adopt a new congressional map that redraws five districts to be more Democratic-leaning, ABC News projects. Championed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the ballot initiative intends to offset the effects of President Donald Trump's efforts in Texas to add five Republican-held seats to Congress as Republicans seek to maintain their control of the U.S. House ahead of the 2026 midterm election. California and Texas are just two states that have been at the center of the contentious battle for control of the House in 2026, as more states across the country take a closer look...
