Our early childhood development specialists will listen to your concerns, share our expertise in child development, and work with you to create a plan to support your child’s development while affirming their individuality. NWC Kids Early Supports provides whole child developmental services. This means we don’t rely solely on one medical recommendation or concern, but learn about the child’s caregivers, where they spend time, and their social-emotional strengths and weaknesses. Early Supports services that align with the relationships most important to your child have been scientifically shown to support social-emotional development and help children build strong neural pathways. Home means a lot of things these days, and our services reflect that. We’ve had great success delivering a mix of in-person and virtual Early Supports therapy and consultations.

When we work with you to develop your child’s individualized plan, you choose whether services will be in-person at home, in a clinic setting, virtual, or a combination. Early Supports, sometimes known as “Early Intervention,” is a unique program at the intersection of educational support and medical support for children with disabilities. Our early childhood development specialists include speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, special educators, physical therapists, infant mental health therapists, feeding therapists, teachers of the visually impaired, Deaf and hard of hearing specialists, and nutritionists. Social connections are an essential foundation for vital learning experiences. Our EPIC program promotes meaningful social connections for children, families, and providers, especially when children have neurodiversity or have experienced limited social interaction or trauma. This evidence-based program that supports infant mental health and attachment development. With PFR, parents and caregivers learn practical, in-depth, effective strategies for promoting secure and healthy relationships with children from birth to 5. CHERiSH provides infant mental health services for children and families in the child welfare system.

The program is created and supported by Kindering. The Northwest Center Kids Early Supports Hospital-to-Home program supports families and their babies ages birth to 6 months (adjusting for prematurity) in the critical time when babies transition home from a hospital stay. The program is designed to support positive social-emotional, developmental, and medical outcomes for babies. We hope this FAQ answers your most important questions about Early Supports. A comprehensive evaluation is completed by early childhood developmental specialists to evaluate a child’s strengths and areas for improvement based on age and medical history.

We evaluate language skills (both expressive and receptive), motor skills, adaptive (self-help), cognitive, social-emotional skills, and review hearing and vision. We can also evaluate feeding, sensory processing, infant mental health, and nutrition based on family and child need. It means you can access our wide variety of ability-affirming care to support you and your child as they develop. That is completely up to you; our program is voluntary. An evaluation by two developmental specialists will focus on highlighting your child’s strengths and sharing expert information and advice on where your child may benefit from some support. Our team of early childhood developmental specialists are trained to listen, understand, and learn about your young child.

The providers will work closely with parents and caregivers to practice strategies that can be repeated and implemented by you. Feedback on strategies will be discussed and adaptations will be made based on parent and caregiver input. Juana didn’t meet the son she gave birth to until he was ten days old. It was the summer of 2017. She was five months pregnant.
