dnc chair congratulates mayor elect zohran mamdani on win

Tonight, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, handily won his election, sending another clear sign that Democrats are winning across the map when focusing on issues of affordability. In response to Zohran Mamdani’s win, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement: “Mayor-elect Mamdani ran an impressive campaign, laser-focused on what matters most to working families in New York: lowering costs, expanding access to affordable child care, and making it easier for families to make ends... His campaign galvanized and energized voters across New York City and met those voters where they live. Mayor-elect Mamdani’s campaign illustrated the power of a big-tent party that focuses relentlessly on lifting up all working people.” Heading into tonight, Democrats had won or overperformed in 46 out of 47 key elections this year.

Democrats will enter 2026 with strong momentum heading into the midterms, as the DNC continues to invest in organizing and building power across the country. Democrat Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, becoming the youngest man picked to lead the five boroughs in modern history in what is widely seen as a watershed moment... Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who will also be the city’s first-ever Muslim and South Asian mayor, was declared the winner of the 2025 race for City Hall by the Associated Press shortly after... The election was marked by massive turnout, with more than 2 million votes cast and Mamdani capturing more than a million of them himself, according to early Board of Elections tabulations. It wasn’t immediately clear if he’d ultimately clinch an outright majority of the vote — a key benchmark — once all ballots get counted. Still, with nearly 98% of votes tabulated, Mamdani led his closest opponent, former Gov.

Andrew Cuomo, by more than 150,000 ballots — a 50.4% to 41.5% margin that the mayor-elect declared is “a mandate” for enacting his affordability agenda. “New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a city we can afford and a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that,” Mamdani said at his election night... As for Cuomo, Mamdani sneered: “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on the politics that abandon the many and answers only to the few.” Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, right, and his wife, Rama Duwaji, react to supporters during an election night watch party, Tuesday in New York. BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Zohran Mamdani will be the next mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim and person of South Asian descent — as well as the youngest in over a century — to... "The future is in our hands," Mamdani declared to roaring applause Tuesday night at a victory celebration in Brooklyn. "My friends, tonight we have toppled a political dynasty." The 34-year-old, Ugandan-born Democratic socialist defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an Independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa in Tuesday's election, according to a race call by the Associated Press.

It's a remarkable ascent for Mamdani, who was a relatively unknown state assemblymember representing a district in Queens when he entered the crowded mayoral race last year. He went on to win June's Democratic primary by 12 percentage points, quickly becoming one of the country's most popular and polarizing politicians along the way. Updated on: November 5, 2025 / 11:32 AM EST / CBS New York Mamdani promised to bring New York City into an age of "relentless improvement" as he claimed victory in the mayoral race late Tuesday night. He said his win was one for the working people of New York and reiterated his campaign promises on affordability. "Let the words we've spoken together, the dreams we've dreamt together, become the agenda we deliver together," Mamdani said.

Zohran Mamdani declared victory in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday night, after former governor Andrew Cuomo conceded the race in a stunning upset. Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist who galvanized voters with an energetic campaign centered on the cost of living, took a commanding position just hours after the polls closed, though the race's ultimate outcome will...

With victory all but assured, Mamdani told supporters on Tuesday night: "Tonight, we made history. In the words of Nelson Mandela, 'It always seems impossible until it is done.' My friends, we have done it. I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City." Newsweek has contacted the Mamdani and Cuomo campaigns for comment via email outside of regular working hours. Mamdani, a member of the state Assembly since 2021, has not officially been declared the winner since he has not received more than 50 percent of the vote. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani defeated former Gov.

Andrew Cuomo, who ran as a third-party candidate, after also defeating Cuomo in a June primary. Republican Curtis Sliwa was also in the race. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams was also running as a third-party hopeful but dropped out of the race this fall, though his name still appeared on ballots.
