(You can download a print version of this page here.) The first step in pursuing membership at Resurrection OPC is to attend worship services to get a feel for the teaching, worship, and life of the congregation. The second step is to review, either on your own or with the pastor, our membership book, The Gospel and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. If you have any questions or need any clarification after reviewing the membership material, request a meeting with the pastor prior to meeting with the elders of the church (the session). If you were previously a member of another church and would like to obtain a letter of standing or transfer, please have this letter sent to the session prior to meeting with the elders. Welcome to the Resurrection OPC Church Library!
The Church Library exists to give members and friends of Resurrection free access to excellent Christian literature and reference materials for discipleship, growth, and learning. Click here to access the library catalog. The Church Library is located downstairs in the large room used for fellowship events, children’s Sunday School, and the pastor’s office. It is in the corner nearest the hallway. Using the Library Checkout Logbook located in the library, write down the date, the title and author of the book you are checking out, and your name. Please return the book within 4 weeks.
Returns can be placed in the return bin located in the library. The books are arranged by topic, with various sections clearly labeled. These topics are also reflected in the “Tags” column of the online catalog. If you see a book in the online catalog that you would like to check out, check the topical tag and look for the corresponding label on the physical library bookshelves. The current topics (in the order they appear on the bookshelves) are: Lesson 1 Handout: Reading and Understanding Old Testament Narrative
Lesson 2 Handout: Reading and Understanding the Poetry of the Psalms Lesson 3 Handout: Reading and Understanding Old Testament Law In 2 Timothy 1.13-14, the apostle Paul writes, “Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” Notice this. As Paul contemplates his protégé ministering in a post-apostolic world, he doesn’t simply tell him to follow the words he’s heard, but “the pattern of the sound words.” Doesn’t this imply that, within the...
The goal in studying Bible doctrine is to identify and utilize this pattern for the sake of knowing Scripture better – and therefore knowing God better. At Resurrection, we study Bible doctrine because we believe it will help us connect the dots in God’s story. Our statements of doctrine – the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms – serve us as a theological concordance. They do not replace God’s Word, but rather they summarize it. The main textbook for our doctrine class is A Harmony of the Westminster Confession and Catechisms, edited by Morton H. Smith.
This volume sets the texts of the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism, and the Shorter Catechism in three parallel columns. Below each paragraph is printed the Scripture references, so that readers can “check the work” of the confessional theologians against the Bible. As we work through each section of our doctrine textbook, we read and discuss a few pages of comments. These are available for download below (click on the links marked ‘diagram’ or ‘lesson’). The entire commentary can be downloaded as a single document, The Confession of the Presbyterian Church(4th ed), or separately by lesson: In this “Q&A” series, Pastor Zach Simmons answers questions from the congregation about the Bible, theology, church history, defending the faith (apologetics)—anything folks want to ask about.
Q&A #1: Predestination and Free Will … How Does This Work?Q&A #2: Why do we using sprinkling instead of immersion for baptism?Q&A #3: Jesus Standing at Stephen’s MartyrdomQ&A #4: Missing Doctrines in the Creeds?Q&A... First meeting of General Assembly (June 11, 1936) The Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) is a denomination with deep roots in American Presbyterianism. Prior to the American Civil War, there was one main Presbyterian denomination in the United States. As the nation was split between north and south during that conflict, so was the Presbyterian Church. Eventually, both the northern and southern churches were sadly influenced and transformed by liberal theology which denies some of the most fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith.
The liberalization of the church occurred first in the north and came to a climax in the 1920s and 30s. The Orthodox Presbyterian Church was founded on June 11, 1936, in the aftermath of the fundamentalist-modernist controversy, under the leadership of J. Gresham Machen (longtime professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary, who also founded Westminster Theological Seminary in 1929). With the infiltration of theological liberalism, the mainline Presbyterian Church in the USA had departed from historic Christianity, including the rejection of doctrines such as the inspiration and authority of Scripture, the virgin birth... Originally calling itself the Presbyterian Church of America, the young church was forced by the threat of a lawsuit to change its name in 1939, and it adopted the name Orthodox Presbyterian Church. The OPC began with small numbers and remains a small denomination today with roughly 300 congregations nationwide.
Even so, it is a denomination that is experiencing no small growth today. Much effort is being exerted to plant and establish new congregations in all parts of the country. From the very beginning, the OPC has been active in foreign missions as well. Some of the early missionaries went to Japan and Korea. Today we have missionaries on every inhabited continent except Australia. Ash Wednesday services at all Resurrection locations will be held on schedule today.
Scheduled programming has resumed for Thursday, February 13 at all Resurrection locations. Sunday School and Confirmation all fall under the heading of Discipleship Groups. These are groups that allow students to grow deeper in their faith as they seek to become more committed Christians. These groups are offered during the school year, mid-August through April. The June and July schedule varies per location. Weekly Discipleship Groups (including confirmation) begin with an orientation session for parents and students on August 17 at 9 am (check your location for more specifics), with groups officially beginning August 24.
Registration opens every year for the new school year on July 1. Registration is open all year with the exception of Confirmation which closes on Labor Day.
