Did Commanders Improve The Defense In 2025 Nfl Draft Espn
The Washington Commanders head into free agency with several needs next week. How many of their free agents will the Commanders re-sign? Will Washington make a splash in free agency? Whatever the Commanders do in free agency may not impact their draft plans, as general manager Adam Peters will draft the best player available. With the 2025 NFL combine in the books, Jordan Reid of ESPN released his first post-combine mock draft. It's two rounds.
And in his mock draft, Reid addresses two significant needs for the Commanders at picks No. 29 and 61. First, at 29th overall, Reid projects Marshall EDGE Mike Green to Washington. Dante Fowler Jr. led the Commanders with 10.5 sacks in 2024 but is set to be a free agent, so finding a young edge rusher is near the top of Washington's priority list. Green was the FBS leader in sacks this season (17.0) and his suddenness to race past blockers was seen frequently on film, resulting in the fifth-most pressures nationally (48).
With his traits and burst, he's an edge presence who could play right away. Scouts I have talked to don't have a consensus grade or draft range on Green, as his projections continue to be all over the place. Based on Reid's assessment alone, Green almost sounds like a boom-or-bust pick. That's not true. If you watch Green, he was dominant and excelled when the competition was better. Green would give the Commanders an explosive, young pass rusher, something it has lacked recently.
The Washington Commanders made great strides in 2024, but there’s always room for improvement. Just ask ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., who has the Commanders taking one of the biggest defensive ends in the 2025 NFL Draft. Washington’s defense performed much better than the unit that allowed a league-worst 388.9 yards per game last season, but as Kiper points out in his latest mock draft, the team still allowed 4.8 yards... Kiper has the Commanders taking Nic Scourton, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive end from Texas A&M with the 29th pick in the draft. And not a moment too soon. Defensive ends Clelin Ferrell, Dante Fowler Jr.
and Jalyn Holmes are all about to become free agents after combining for 79 tackles, 16 sacks and three forced fumbles in the regular season. He transferred to Texas A&M last season and put up five sacks for the Aggies. Aside from teammate Shemar Stewart (290 pounds) and Oregon’s Jordan Burch (295 pounds), Scourton is the biggest edge defender among the draft’s top prospects and around 30 pounds heavier than both Ferrell and Fowler. Although the Commanders possessed just five picks in the 2025 class — a credit to general manager Adam Peters' numerous high-profile trades this offseason — this team still managed to add quality prospects with...
While it’s difficult to make waves with limited draft capital, Washington did as well as fans could have hoped, earning them solid marks in PFF’s draft grades. 1 (29): T Josh Conerly Jr., Oregon2 (61): CB Trey Amos, Ole Miss4 (128): WR Jaylin Lane, Virginia Tech6 (205): LB Kain Medrano, UCLA7 (245): RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Arizona A tackle with length and movement skills in Round 1: A two-year starter for the Oregon Ducks at left tackle, Josh Conerly Jr. allowed just two sacks over the past two years. He graded above the 75th percentile in all facets, including a 78.1 true pass set PFF pass-blocking grade in 2024. Conerly shows good athleticism for the position, displaying quick and explosive feet.
He doesn’t need to immediately start after the Commanders traded for Laremy Tunsil this offseason, but he could slide into guard and be very effective. A scheme-versatile cornerback with the ideal blend of size and skill: Trey Amos brings good speed and strong movement skills to the Commanders’ defense. He earned an 85.6 PFF coverage grade in 2024, forcing 13 incompletions and recording three interceptions. A standout at the Senior Bowl, Amos showcases good instincts in zone coverage and has the size and athleticism to lock down opposing receivers in man coverage.
