The Detroit Lions’ backfield is set to be one of the most captivating storylines in fantasy football this season. With Jahmyr Gibbs emerging as a legitimate threat to dethrone reigning champion Saquon Barkley as the top running back, fantasy football managers have some tough decisions ahead. The departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson adds an intriguing layer of uncertainty to the Lions’ offensive plans. Both Gibbs and David Montgomery offer compelling fantasy football value, but their roles may shift in ways that could make or break championship runs. Gibbs was hot on the heels of Saquon Barkley in 2024 and is a leading candidate to be crowned RB1 this coming season. The loss of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has impacted the draft stock of the entire Lions offense, but Gibbs should be right in the mix regardless.

While on paper, Barkley should be the favorite to repeat as the top running back in fantasy, back-to-back seasons as the RB1 overall are incredibly rare. Also, from Weeks 2-18 last season, it was Gibbs who led all running backs in fantasy points per game. How Many endzone celebrations will Detroit Lions RB JAHMYR GIBBS perform this season? The Detroit Lions are entering Week 10 of the NFL season looking to build on a 5-3 start through the first half of their season. Entering Sunday afternoon, the Lions will take on the Washington Commanders in a favorable matchup for Detroit’s backfield following a quiet day in the team’s Week 9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs was limited to a season-low 28 yards from scrimmage over 12 total touches.

From a fantasy football perspective, Gibbs’ 4.3 PPR points also marked a season-low, as the star back looks to right the ship versus a lowly Commanders defense on Sunday. Gibbs has offered notable fantasy production for much of the season prior to his Week 9 struggles, emerging with a 35.3-point effort in Week 7 versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, prior to the team’s... Gibbs racked up 218 yards from scrimmage, finding the end zone twice on the ground. Fantasy owners are hopeful Gibbs can re-capture this level of production through the second half of the season, as playoff seeding begins to cement itself down the stretch. Here’s why I’m confident the Lions’ former first-round pick will dominate fantasy football over the next several games. Detroit’s Week 10 matchup versus Washington presents an immediate opportunity for Gibbs to bounce back following a lowly performance in his last time out.

The Lions’ RB1 has cemented his role, entering the weekend as the NFL’s 13th-leading rusher, averaging nearly five yards per carry this season. Gibbs is leading Detroit’s backfield with 113 carries, to David Montgomery’s 89 attempts on the ground. Jahmyr Gibbs Records Career-Worst 28 Scrimmage Yards in Week 9 Loss

The most-discussed aspect of Detroit's Sunday night loss at Philadelphia appears to be the strong performance by the Eagles defense, followed closely by complaints about the officiating and insults hurled at Jalen Hurts' passing. But the biggest offensive star of the minimally offensive 16-9 game was easily RB Jahmyr Gibbs. He rushed just 12 times for 39 yards (3.3 per rush), Gibbs' second lackluster rushing performance among the past three games. But he racked up a career-high 107 receiving yards on a team-high 5 catches. Gibbs' eight targets ranked second on the team. His 28 pass routes ranked third and tied his season high, set back in Week 1.

Gibbs' route rate didn't pick up at all in Week 10, the first game of HC Dan Campbell assuming playcalling duties. But Sunday night gave us a season-high rate for the star back. That included a season-high seven pass snaps run from WR positions, according to Pro Football Focus: The two games since the Campbell takeover have now included a dip in routes for Gibbs in a lopsided victory against a soft Washington defense and the aforementioned season-high in routes against an ascending... So what's the takeaway here? It seems to be that the Lions are embracing offensive variation and game-specific planning.

Philly's D sports speedy LBs who play well in coverage, but there's not a LB who can match Gibbs' speed. Combine that with windy conditions, a good top-2 at CB for the Eagles, and TE Sam LaPorta being out, and this Gibbs-featured passing plan made plenty of sense. Through Week 6, splitting work with David Montgomery as expected, Jahmyr Gibbs was "fine", and even pretty good, as a fantasy football producer (RB10 by points per game in 0.5-point PPR). But he had not topped 85 rushing yards in a game, with two games where he was not targeted in the passing game. In Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings, however spurred by Montgomery suffering a knee injury during the game, Gibbs had a huge day (116 rushing yards, two touchdowns; four catches for 44 yards) on... During his rookie season last year, Gibbs' fantasy managers who were patient were rewarded big-time.

He may be on a similar track this year, and Lions head coach Dan Campbell sort of teased that a a few weeks ago. "(Gibbs) continues to get better, and there was about probably three runs in there yesterday that are this close to going all the way", Campbell said on Oct. 1. It's been like that every week. There's been more and more of these that are this close. So, I would anticipate he's about to really take off.

He's coming on." Looking at boom and bust fantasy performances from Week 7 and what they may mean heading into Week 8 and beyond, Beckett Mesko of Pro Football Focus highlighted Gibbs.
