Remember when David Ortiz lost his cool in the Red Sox dugout during a game against the Orioles, which led to a confrontation with Dustin Pedroia, a splintered bat and a smashed dugout phone? Well, Big Papi received one of those keepsakes Thursday night in a pregame ceremony at Camden Yards before his final regular-season game against the Orioles. Red Sox slugger received dugout phone he smashed in 2013

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is having arguably the greatest farewell season in the history of baseball, and throughout the year he’s been showered with gifts from opponents. But on Thursday at Camden Yards, the Baltimore Orioles gave him the greatest going away present ever. He was unhappy with the home plate umpire not granting him time out, and he took out his frustration on the dugout phone.

You won’t see many more creative retirement gifts than that. That’s a keeper, Big Papi. The Baltimore Orioles found the perfect retirement gift for David Ortiz. They gave him the exact bullpen phone that he obliterated on July 27, 2013. The Orioles also noted that they donated $10,000 in Ortiz's name to a charity that helps critically ill children in the Dominican Republic. This gift is similar to the one given to Big Papi by the Twins -- both are funny.

They gave Ortiz a personalized jar of peanut butter in memory of the peanut butter prank his former Twins teammates pulled on him. Ortiz's final season has been full of lots of laughs -- before and during games -- and the pregame retirement ceremonies have been wonderful. [wibbitz id="b02ea283bf9334a2088683e3f1d25df39" autoplay="false"] Three years ago, Ortiz destroyed a phone in the visitor’s dugout at Camden Yards. The Orioles saved the phone and gave it to him as a farewell present. For Orioles fans, the most memorable of the moments of the career of David Ortiz is surely the time he vandalized the visiting dugout at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in the middle of...

Prior to Thursday’s series finale against the Red Sox, which will be the last time Ortiz plays in Camden Yards in the regular season (you never know about the playoffs), the Orioles took their... As Orioles broadcaster Jim Hunter listed Ortiz’s career accomplishments, he also made mention of the dominance of Ortiz at the hands of former Oriole Brian Matusz. The O’s then showed a little Ortiz highlight package consisting entirely of Ortiz hitting home runs against the Yankees, perhaps hoping for a little compromise between the O’s and Red Sox fans in attendance. Then, because they had to - really, they HAD to - they played the video clip of Ortiz’s dugout phone destruction, and, for the kicker, brought out Adam Jones bearing the very same phone... Ortiz, like many prominent professional athletes before him, has gone on a farewell tour of sorts, receiving nice ovations from just about every opposing crowd and picking up a few gifts along the way. This happened on Thursday at Camden Yards in Baltimore prior to a game between the Red Sox and Orioles.

Ortiz received a gift from Boston’s NL East rival, but not just any gift. It was a bullpen phone he broke during an epic tirade in 2013. It’s been deemed authentic and should also be deemed awesome. The tirade in question came back in 2013 when Ortiz disagreed with a strike call during an at-bat at Camden Yards. After striking out, the Red Sox DH walked toward the dugout while continuing to remind the home plate umpire about his bad call. BALTIMORE — If David Ortiz was amused by the Baltimore Orioles gifting him the very dugout phone he shattered with his bat three years ago at Camden Yards, he didn’t show it. Ortiz did not appear to smile during the on-field ceremony to honor Ortiz Thursday night until O’s center fielder Adam Jones ran out of the dugout and presented Ortiz with the broken piece of... The O’s eventually presented him with a $10,000 check to the World Pediatric Project in his name to help critically ill children in the Dominican Republic. Ortiz clearly appreciated that.

The first two gifts, though, seemed odd. "It was aight, man," Ortiz said about the ceremony after the Sox' 5-3 win over the Orioles. "You know, just thank Baltimore for the memories and see you in the playoffs."
