The bad news: the more Dallas wins, the worse their draft position gets. MORE: 4 takeaways from Cowboys' impressive win vs.
Buccaneers But, in the end, building momentum for next season is more important than landing an unproven talent. While we wait to see what's next for the Cowboys, let's take a spin around the web and check out some of the headlines making the rounds. FRISCO, Texas — With their victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Dallas Cowboys have now won four of their last five games and three of those have been upset wins against playoff contenders. And despite themselves having been officially eliminated from playoff contention prior to the matchup on Sunday Night Football, DaRon Bland and Co. had a mission they were hellbent on sticking to.
They wanted to make life a living hell for veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield, and they did exactly that — Jourdan Lewis snatching away a would-be late-game touchdown from Jalen McMillan and Bland doing almost... "That's just the composure of our defense," Bland said of the latest impressive defensive outing from Mike Zimmer's bunch. "We try to stick it out together, no matter what's going on out there — you stay tight." Mayfield was also sacked four times and fumbled, though he recovered it. It was an evening wherein the Cowboys rightfully could've walked away from upwards of four interceptions if the ball bounced their way on three occasions when he gave them a shot at taking the... Lewis seethed over his dropped interception from earlier in the game, and made up for it in a major way.
Bland had one that he would normally reel in as well and, like Lewis, spent the remainder of the game looking for another opportunity to disrupt the football gods' plan for his evening. When the Dallas Cowboys fell to 3-7 this season, the talk of Mike McCarthy’s time as the team’s head coach shifted to the past tense. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that McCarthy would be gone. A lot has changed in the past five weeks. The Cowboys, without quarterback Dak Prescott since Week 9, have come alive. Cooper Rush, Prescott’s replacement, is playing pretty well.
The Cowboys have played like the team they were expected to be heading into the season. And McCarthy might be saving his job, which is remarkable considering where he was a little more than a month ago. The Cowboys had a good 26-24 win on Sunday night against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that seemed like it was cruising toward an NFC South title and has some high quality wins on... Dallas outplayed Tampa Bay for most of the game and then held on late when the Bucs rallied. Dallas cornerback DaRon Bland stole the ball from Buccaneers running back Rachaad White right before White was down, and the fumble with 1:26 left sealed the Cowboys’ win. The Cowboys improved to 7-8 with the win, which isn’t great but a lot better than they were in late November.
The Cowboys were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, before their game ever kicked off. That’s ironic considering they’re finally looking like a playoff team. If the Cowboys decide to extend McCarthy, it won’t be a popular decision. The Cowboys' fan base is reactionary and has wanted McCarthy out after every playoff disappointment. Retaining him because of a good finish after the Cowboys’ playoff hopes were practically finished will get a lot of criticism. Week 16 is in the books and so is another win for the Dallas Cowboys after surprising the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 26-24.
The Cowboys led most of the game but still needed a couple of spectacular plays to get the win. For the Buccaneers, this loss was a letdown because it ended a four-game winning streak and dropped them into second place in their division. Since the NFC South will probably get only one team into the playoffs, this could have cost Tampa their season. Dallas found out that their season had essentially ended a few hours before the Sunday night matchup with Tampa Bay even kicked off. When Washington beat Philadelphia earlier in the day, the Cowboys were eliminated from playoff contention, no matter the outcome of the Sunday night game. So, the Cowboys really had nothing more to play for than pride by kickoff.
"I said, 'Hey, let's take the ball and let's get up and get going and get this thing started the right way,'" Mike McCarthy explained. "So I thought it was good the offense went out there and got some points on the board." And that’s exactly what Jerry Jones’ team did bursting out the gates with their most productive first half of the season in terms of points. Dallas scored 23 of its 26 points en route to win No. 7 this season, in the first half. They played like a team that actually had something left to play for.
"Proud of those guys, boy," Jerry Jones said. "They wouldn't give it up out there. So, I'm real proud of them, and Mike McCarthy, he just won't let them not think that they're not playing for a Super Bowl out there."
