Daily Devotional Today In The Word
But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. In John Bunyan's allegorical book, The Pilgrim's Progress, one of the characters Christian meets is Mr. Worldly Wiseman.
He attempts to dissuade Christian from following the advice of Evangelist to rid himself of the burden of sin because there are difficulties and dangers on the path. He said, “But why wilt thou seek for ease this way, seeing so many dangers attend it? Especially, since (hadst thou but patience to hear me) I could direct thee to the obtaining of what thou desirest, without the dangers that thou in this way wilt run thyself into. Why in yonder Village (the village is named Morality) there dwells a Gentleman whose name is Legality, a very judicious man, and a man of very good name, that has skill to help men... He hath skill to cure those that are somewhat crazed in their wits with their burdens.” The devil is always a counterfeiter, making imitations of what God has created that are designed to lead us astray.
Often these counterfeits appeal to our interests and desires, appearing to offer an alternative to God's plan that sounds like it would be easier. But Satan's schemes are not designed to benefit us but to destroy us. There is real and genuine wisdom found in the Word of God, and we must not accept the world's imitation. Only the true wisdom of God can direct our steps through this world in a way that will be pleasing to Him. Only the true wisdom of God can protect our hearts from temptation of sin that seek to lead us astray. 1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.
2 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more... 3 And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies... 4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:... 6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. 7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine...
8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. 9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and... The hamster looks outside his glass cage and sees freedom, so he decides to make a run for it. But after a while, he realises that he is not getting anywhere, so he runs faster. He runs until he is exhausted and can run no more.
Can you identify with the hamster? You have been trying for years to break a habit, yet today you’re still in the same place, or worse. You have made New Year’s resolutions to give up your bad habits or have a better marriage or work on getting fit or improving your finances. Yet, you’re still in the same position. Why? Because you’re using the wrong method!
You cannot change yourself. The only way for a hamster to find freedom is if his owner reaches down inside the cage and lifts him out. He needs somebody bigger than himself, with greater power. David said: ‘I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord. Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord’ (vv. 1-4 NLT). The way to get off the treadmill is to cry out to God, and He will set you free.

I have been reading this devotional the past 3 years and have found nothing that comes close out there. Each day it’s written in such a way that is not only full of wisdom and truth that I feel God is directly guiding me, but I learn so much about how those in... Their problems, doubts and worries have come alive to me. And isn’t that what it’s all about? We Christians sometimes think we are unique in what we face in this world, these times and situations are too different from biblical times. But, even as our Lord has knitted us to be unique, the problems we face as humans are no different; just the time in history.
Today in the Word shines a light, God’s light and wisdom for all of us. Thank you Moody Bible Institute that your writers seek God’s spirit each day before they sit down and write these. What wisdom, insight, strength and encouragement we are provided with each day. May God continue to bless the work they have been entrusted to do. Thank you for this encouraging review. I've shared it with our team.
To God be the glory!!! And those [in the last group] are the ones on whom seed was sown on the good soil; and they hear the word [of God, the good news regarding the way of salvation] and... It is important that we receive the Word of God. Some hear the Word but don’t actually receive it, and it does them no good. In Mark Chapter 4, Jesus told a parable of a sower who sowed seed (the Word of God) into different kinds of ground, but only one type of soil bore fruit. The different kinds of ground represent the different types of hearers of the Word of God.
We are taught in this parable that even those who are willing to hear don’t always hear fully or in the right way. They don’t hear with the serious intent of truly receiving the Word they hear. They are emotional hearers who initially get excited, but when their faith is tested, they give up. When the Word of God is genuinely and sincerely received, it has the power to do an amazing work in our souls. It renews our mind and changes us into the image of Jesus Christ. If you haven’t had a genuine change of character, ask yourself if you are truly receiving the Word of God.
