Left-hander Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers won the American League Cy Young award for the second straight season. Skubal becomes the 23rd pitcher to win multiple Cy Young Awards. Skubal is the fifth AL pitcher to win the award in consecutive seasons and the second to do so with the Tigers, joining McLain (1968-69). The others were Palmer in 1975-76 with the Orioles and Martinez in 1999-2000 with the Red Sox In the NL, Maddux (1992-95) and Johnson (1999-2002) each won four years in a row.

Other back-to-back winners were Koufax (1965-66), Kershaw (2013-14), Lincecum (2008-09), Scherzer (2016-17) and deGrom (2018-19). It is the seventh time a Detroit pitcher has been honored with Skubal joining fellow two-time winner McLain as well as Verlander (2011), Scherzer (2013) and Guillermo “Willie” Hernandez (1984). Cy Young winner, even though Crochet gave him a good run for his money this year. Skenes is generally considered the favorite in the N.L. Kurtz probably earned himself the hardware by launching 36 home runs.

The N.L. Rookie of the Year race feels fairly wide open. With awards voting, the Prospect Promotion Incentive has become a consideration in recent years. Brown has already earned the Astros an extra pick just by being a Cy Young finalist. Skenes received all 30 first-place votes and garnered 210 overall points. Sánchez finished with 30 votes for second place and 120 total points. Yamamoto finished in a distant third place for Cy Young Award voting by accumulating 72 points. Yamamoto received 16 votes for third place, 11 for fourth place and two for fifth place.

Skenes has now won a second Baseball Writers’ Association of America Award in just his second professional season, after being named 2024 NL Rookie of the Year. Skenes is just the third pitcher in MLB history to win Rookie of the Year and a Cy Young Award within his first two seasons, joining Dwight Gooden and Fernando Valenzuela. Skenes finished with the best ERA in the Majors at 1.97, posting a sub-2.00 mark for the second consecutive year. His 217 ERA+ and 2.36 FIP were also the best marks among all pitchers. Additionally, the right-hander finished top-five in strikeouts and WHIP.
