The College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD) drives creative thinking, action, and leadership in communication, digital storytelling, media, design, and the arts. Our core disciplines of architecture, art and design, communication studies, journalism, music and theatre encourage students and faculty to explore opportunities that occur at their intersection. As the College’s chief advancement officer, Kevin Thompson leads the College’s integrated advancement office, which includes advancement services, corporate and foundation relations, development, and marketing and communications. He is responsible for securing private resources to support and advance the College’s mission and priorities, as well as directing how the College’s identity and work are shared with the broader community. Thompson joined the University of Washington College of Arts & Sciences as associate dean for advancement in November 2022, after serving in advancement leadership roles at Northeastern University, North Carolina State University, and the... A native of coastal North Carolina, Thompson earned his doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development.

He serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NC State University, where he earned his master of public administration and a graduate certificate in nonprofit management. The Katherine and John Simpson Endowed Deanship in the College of Arts & Sciences provides flexible funding to promote interdisciplinary teaching and research across the College. The Washington State Legislature has allocated significant funding toward the construction of a new Chemical Sciences Building to accelerate research and teaching in chemistry at the UW. Faculty and students across the College are working at the leading edge of AI technology to develop research tools, applications, and pedagogical innovations in nearly every field.

Students learn the methods and craft to create innovative products, services, and communications to address society’s most pressing issues. UW Design students, alumni, and faculty work in various industries including environmental sustainability, education, healthcare, and economic and social justice. The Division of Design offers a Bachelor of Design (BDes) degree in three majors and a Master of Design (MDes) degree. Completion of a BDes degree requires three years.
