The Center has a long-standing relationship in which it advises and supports the work of the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics, for which Center Faculty director Mitt Regan and Center Senior Fellow Michael Frisch... This includes assistance with advice on article submissions; advice on and support for symposia, speakers, and other events; guidance on journal administration; and assistance in developing student Note topics.

The new report, published by our Center and the Thomson Reuters Institute, finds that firms experienced financial success in 2024, and many are edging toward rethinking their business model in light of technological advancements. The report is dedicated to the memory of Jim Jones, Senior Fellow of the Center, who contributed enormously to the Center's work over many years. Many students, however, may want to go further to deepen their understanding of the profession they are about to enter, or to prepare for one of the emerging ethics-related careers, such as bar counsel... In at least one state, there are now professional judges who hear only cases involving charges of ethical violations by attorneys. The basic two-credit Professional Responsibility course examines the professional and ethical obligations and duties of the lawyer in today's society. It examines the Model Rules of Professional Conduct in some depth drawing comparisons, when appropriate, with the Model Code of Professional Responsibility. But it does so in a larger context of the profession and the relationship of attorney to client as well as the attorney's ethical duty as a professional in relation to a moral duty... The course also introduces the student to the bar admission process and to attorney disciplinary proceedings and how they work.

The focus of each section of the basic course varies somewhat by professor. The two-credit course, Professional Responsibility and the Future of the Legal Profession, deals with ethical problems from the standpoint of the practicing lawyer confronted with real world issues requiring decision making on the lawyers... Center programs focus on the roles, responsibilities, and professional identities of lawyers in specific areas of practice, and on trends that are shaping the legal profession. WASHINGTON – The year ahead is likely to be fraught with numerous challenges and uncertainty for law firms, according to the 2023 Report on the State of the Legal Market, issued today by the... Although 2022 yielded reasonably good financial results for law firms, 2023 will likely involve multiple headwinds, such as slowing demand, less client spend optimism, higher expenses, falling productivity, weakening realization, and inflation. In addition, client work may be shifting, threatening to reshuffle the hierarchy of the law firm market. Profits-per-equity partner (PPEP) soared to record levels in 2021. But PPEP fell 4.2% for the 12 months ending November 2022. When financial books close for 2022, it will likely be the first full-year drop for PPEP since 2009.

The report states partners “may feel significantly less well-off than in 2021” when combined with effects of inflation. “After finding ways to endure and even thrive through the effects of the pandemic, law firms now face a confluence of factors that look to make 2023 a challenging year,” said James W. Jones, a senior fellow at the Center on Ethics and the Legal Profession at Georgetown Law and the report’s lead author. “Firms are being confronted with issues ranging from slowing demand to record-low productivity, all of which could have significant impacts on their economic and institutional health in 2023 and beyond.” Law firms saw a substantial slowing in demand for their services throughout 2022. The report attributes this collapse in demand primarily to a sharp contraction in transactional work, such as M&A, brought about by growing economic uncertainty. This has particularly impacted larger firms, such as the Am Law 100, where demand has fallen “precipitously.”
