(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File) ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — NFL MVP Josh Allen was rewarded Sunday with a contract extension worth $330 million, including an NFL record $250 million of it guaranteed, which makes him among the league’s highest-paid players. The Buffalo Bills announced the agreement, while two people with knowledge of the deal revealed the contract’s value to The Associated Press.
The people spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the Bills did not release that figure, which was first reported by ESPN.com. The new deal adds two years to Allen’s contract and locks the 28-year-old in through the 2030 season. Cleveland quarterback DeShaun Watson’s five-year contract signed in 2022 set the previous record in featuring $230 million in guarantees, per Spotrac.com. The total value of Allen’s new contract ranks second behind Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, who signed a 10-year, $450 million in 2020. The Buffalo Bills broke the bank for Josh Allen this offseason, giving him a six-year extension worth $330 million with $250 million of that already guaranteed. It's a lot of money that will help Allen plan his wedding with movie star Hailee Steinfeld, but it could also change how the NFL gives money out to quarterbacks moving forward.
Bleacher Report writer Alex Kay is already thinking that Allen's contract has sent shockwaves throughout the league. "Allen's contract is ultimately a team-friendly one—he surely could have commanded more per year in wake of winning his first NFL MVP award—and could cost his fellow passers leverage at the negotiating table," Kay... "The first player to see a tangible impact from Allen's deal may be Brock Purdy, who is due for his first extension with the San Francisco 49ers following a blistering start to his career. Josh Allen was the NFL MVP in 2024. The Buffalo Bills rewarded their quarterback for his dazzling season. On Sunday, the Bills and Allen agreed to terms on a record-breaking contract.
The numbers are six years for $330 million, $250 million guaranteed. That is the biggest guarantee in NFL history. That translates into $55 million a year for Buffalo's superstar quarterback. Allen threw 28 touchdown passes, rushed for 12 scores and was picked six times last season. That made him the first player in league history to have at least 25 TDs passes, 10 rushing touchdowns while being intercepted fewer than 10 times in a season. Allen, who will be 29 in May, threw for 3,731 yards.
A first-round pick out of Wyoming in 2018, Allen has only played for Buffalo in the NFL. He has thrown for 26,434 yards and 195 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 4,142 yards and 65 scores. Josh Allen is the latest to get a huge hike in his paycheck. Coming off an MVP season in which he led the Buffalo Bills to another AFC Championship Game, the franchise moved quickly to lock him up before the market climbed higher. They handed him a six-year, $330 million extension, averaging $55 million annually. However, this payout has also created new salary-cap challenges for the team, the same kind that plagued them last season. Despite the cap rising to $279.2 million in 2025 (a $23.8 million increase from 2024), Buffalo currently has only about $1.846 million left in effective cap space as per Over The Cap. The front office has prioritized keeping its core together, handing out nearly $637 million in extensions to homegrown talent this offseason alone.
The Buffalo Bills have reached an agreement with Josh Allen that keeps the quarterback under contract through 2030, the team announced Sunday. The deal is worth $330 million with an NFL-record $250 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Allen's new $55-million average salary is tied for the second-highest league-wide, trailing only Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott's $60-million price tag, according to Spotrac. He had previously signed a six-year, $258-million extension with the Bills in 2021. Allen had four years and $130 million left on his existing contract, while the new deal adds two years and $200 million, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Josh Allen’s new $330 million contract with the Buffalo Bills became official yesterday.
The annual value of the contract ties Allen for the top number in the NFL at $55 million a season and the $250 million injury guarantee is the largest guarantee at signing in the... It is such a massive contract and unique situation that it is worth some extra discussion even with all eyes still focused on free agent transactions. What makes the contract so unique is that Allen had four years remaining on his prior contract that he signed back in 2021. The Bills held his rights at $129.554 million for those years and while they would have had to tweak the cash flows in the prior deal regardless, it is incredibly rare that a team... The closest comparison I could come up with is Deshaun Watson following his trade to the Browns where they ripped up his prior four years and replaced it with the infamous five year $230... Watson new deal, however, came off a trade and since an acquiring team has no real investment in the prior contract that are sometimes willing to start over if that works best for both...
Aaron Donald had three years remaining on his contract with the Rams and the Rams just tossed those out and started over once Donald kind of threatened retirement at the time. That is probably the closest thing to this though Allen didn’t seem to have to pull at the Bills to push them in a new direction. Allen’s contract was signed at a similar time as Patrick Mahomes and both bucked any modern trends in the NFL. Mahomes’ contract was way out in left field, taking a 10 year deal in a league that had moved to four and five year contracts. This locked Mahomes in at $45 million a year over a 12 year term. Allen followed suit taking a six year extension that tied him to the Bills for an 8 year term at $43 million a season.
Both contracts wound up being obsolete by the time the ink dried.
