By understanding these barriers and implementing effective strategies, educators and schools can create inclusive environments that invite all families to become active participants in their child's learning journey. Many families may not speak the primary language used by the school, making communication between educators and parents challenging. This language barrier can create a disconnect, making it difficult for parents to understand their child's progress, school events, or even how they can support their child's learning at home.
For parents and caregivers working long hours or multiple jobs, finding the time to engage with their child's education can be difficult. School events or parent-teacher meetings may be scheduled during working hours, making it nearly impossible for them to attend without compromising their employment. Some families may lack the financial or technological resources needed to participate fully. Socioeconomic barriers continue to be one of the most significant challenges in achieving equitable early childhood education. The cost of quality early childhood education often exceeds what many families can afford, with some programs costing as much as college tuition. This financial burden is particularly heavy for single-parent households and families living in low-income neighborhoods. Transportation costs, program fees, and additional educational materials create further obstacles for families already struggling to make ends meet.
NAEYC’s Engaging Diverse Families (EDF) project sought answers to this question. The project's goals were to develop a research-based definition of family engagement, identify exemplary family engagement practices in early childhood programs, and share what was learned with the field of early care and education... When families feel included in their child’s education, they are more likely to reinforce what the child is learning in your program when they are at home. The consistency and collaboration communicate to the child that what they are learning is important, and they are more likely to retain those skills, expand on that learning, and thrive.
Increasing family engagement efforts is a great way of strengthening the effectiveness of your high-quality early childhood program. You can’t overstate the impact families have on their children. When little learners come to a childcare center or early school experience, they bring a mind full of what their families do, what their families have taught them or demonstrated in front of them.
