Find the bias of any news site you go to! When reading the news, it can be easy to get trapped into thinking there's only one viable perspective. In reality, all different groups from across the political spectrum may perceive the same event in a completely different light. For example: Headline: Donald Trump signs an executive order that cracks down on undocumented immigrants. Left response: Donald Trump is tearing apart families. Right response: Donald Trump is enforcing US immigration law.

This extension won't tell you what to believe, or what is the "correct" way to perceive an issue. However, it will help inform your own perspective so that rather than accepting the first thing you see as fact, you'll think about who is saying it. Following that line, Bias Finder is not intended to say whether a source is trustworthy or not. Just because a news site has a bias rating of left or right doesn't mean it's any less accurate than a site located in the center, or vice versa. Rather, it just tells you how the analysis is likely to be shaped by political opinions and biases. Two completely factual stories may have very different perspectives: Left headline: Donald Trump signs "Muslim Ban 2.0." Before it can go into effect, a Hawaiian judge strikes it down.

Right headline: Donald Trump claims a Hawaiian judge is threatening national security by striking down his revised immigration executive order. Neither headline is strictly incorrect, but both convey a very different tone about the events. Powered by AllSides. It's like Community Notes for the whole web! Bias Finder is a Chrome extension that helps you identify the political bias of any news website you visit. It empowers readers to recognize how different political groups may interpret the same event differently, promoting critical thinking rather than taking headlines at face value. For example, a news event about an executive order on immigration may be framed as "tearing apart families" from a left-leaning source or as "enforcing US immigration law" from a right-leaning perspective. This tool does not judge the accuracy or trustworthiness of the source; instead, it highlights the underlying biases that shape the tone and perspective of news stories. By understanding these biases, readers can form a more balanced and informed viewpoint. Bias Finder is powered by data from AllSides and encourages users to think critically about the information they consume.

Bias Finder requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing. Bias Finder has earned a good reputation and can be trusted. Discover every extension in use, analyze risks, and enforce blocking policies with Extension Guard We were inspired by how hard it has become to separate fact from opinion online. Each of us had experienced sharing or believing articles that later turned out to be misleading.

For our first hackathon, we wanted to build a simple everyday tool that helps anyone quickly check the credibility of what they’re reading. Bias Detector is a lightweight Chrome extension that scans any webpage or uploaded text. It identifies its bias direction, estimates how much of it could be fake news, and highlights suspicious phrases directly on the page. In a few seconds, users get a clear snapshot of an article’s credibility. We created a Chrome extension with HTML/CSS/JavaScript for the popup interface and content scripts to extract text and apply highlights. On the backend, we used Spring Boot to receive text, URLs, or files and call the Gemini API for bias and fake-news analysis.

The extension normalizes the response and shows clean results in the popup. This was our first hackathon, so there were plenty of bumps: Getting images/icons to display at the right size and spacing in the popup UI. Parsing and normalizing Gemini’s response format so the frontend stayed consistent. Integrating the backend and frontend smoothly took longer than expected. Debugging the highlighting logic so it wouldn’t pick random single words. Despite being newcomers, we built a full stack project under time pressure: A working extension that analyzes whole webpages or uploaded files instantly.

Clear, user-friendly display of bias direction and fake-news percentage. Highlights of suspicious phrases directly on the page. A backend that successfully talks to a large language model (Gemini).
