She’s been thriving in pediatric therapy services with Kindering since she was an infant. We are beyond thankful her family has elected to share their story for the Seattle Times Fund for Those in Need campaign. And we are also deeply thankful for the Seattle Times, who captured this family’s journey and joy so well!

As an organization, Kindering makes a profound difference in the lives of children with diverse abilities and their families. Founded in 1962 by five parents of special needs children with disabilities and developmental delays, Kindering has since evolved into the largest and most comprehensive neurodevelopmental center in the Pacific Northwest. With a mission nothing short of inspiring: to embrace children of all abilities by providing them with the finest education and therapies needed to empower them to soar, they have been a beacon of... At the heart of Kindering's impact lies its dedication to holistic development, education, and support.

Each year, they touch the lives of over 10,000 children and families through an array of services, including pediatric therapies, special education, and family support. Their reach extends to children from birth to 11 years old, encompassing those with cognitive, sensory, and physical disabilities, as well as children facing developmental delays and complex medical needs. An essential aspect of Kindering's ethos is that they do not turn any family away due to an inability to pay. Recognizing the critical importance of early support, Kindering plays a pivotal role in the lives of these children during their most formative years. An astounding 85% of brain development occurs within a child's first three years—an irreplaceable period of growth. During this crucial phase, Kindering provides pediatric therapies, special education classes, and family support services, capitalizing on the infant and toddler brain's remarkable capacity to absorb information.

The impact of Kindering’s work is remarkable – a staggering 99% of the children they serve make measurable progress toward their developmental goals. These early supports have far-reaching, lifelong positive effects, with approximately half of the children completely closing the developmental gap with their typically developing peers by the age of three. It provides pediatric therapies and supports for children ages birth through 10, as well as specialized services to close developmental gaps while supporting the family with education and seminars.

Kindering was founded in 1962 by five parents of special needs children. Now, 60+ years later, Kindering is still supporting their original mission and has helped 10,000 children and families in 2021 alone. They have 4 campuses on the Greater Eastside championing for the children who live there. · Virtual services that provide therapy and support to Kindering families and the public. · CHERISH – An infant mental health program designed to meet the needs of children in the child welfare system and their caregivers alongside a traditional early intervention program. · CUBS – provides support for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families

· Comprehensive developmental assessments for children ages birth to three. Kindering embraces children of diverse abilities and their families by providing the finest education and therapies to nurture hope, courage, and the skills to soar. Each year more than 6,500 children and their families receive crucial therapies, special education, and counseling. Kindering was founded in 1962 by five Bellevue-area mothers of children with disabilities. It was initially called the Eastside Preschool for the Special Child. Within a few years the preschool was incorporated, gained public funding, gradually replaced volunteers with paid professionals, and changed the agency name to Merrywood School.

Innovative programming, including support for fathers, foster care, child care and parent education, and new funding sources, including membership in the United Way of King County and status as a neurodevelopmental center, were added... In 1993, Merrywood School became Kindering Center. To reflect the kindness, kinship, and superior child development services families would receive, we coined the word "Kindering" - the best of early intervention. Kindering is a comprehensive neurodevelopmental center, providing physical and occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and special education for children with developmental delays, as well as supports for the whole family. Our services include specialized outreach for families who are homeless or housing insecure, immigrants and refugees or those whose first language is not English, and families in the kinship and foster care system. Family supports include parent education and support for siblings of children with special needs.
