It seems every day we read about another layoff in the Puget Sound area. Leading tech companies, iconic Northwest businesses, and even 85-year-old organizations like REI have downsized the size of their teams. It is difficult to see colleagues, friends and family members face the reality of a layoff. As communicators we have both an opportunity and a challenge to announce job cuts with compassion, clarity, and context. The balance between crafting a positive message for shareholders, a compassionate message for those losing their job, and a reassuring message for those employees who remain with the organization is tricky and difficult to... I know this because I wrote my own layoff news release many years ago when I was a senior communications executive in financial services.
Talk about a strange assignment! I would encourage anyone who is tasked with writing about layoffs and job cuts to approach the task with empathy, authenticity, and kindness. How someone is treated as they turn in their badge and walk out the door is critically important. Those staying behind are watching every move the company makes and they are making decisions about whether they see alignment between an organization’s stated values and how it treats those losing their job. Put another way, during times of great organizational stress you have an opportunity reinforce what your company or group stands for. While devastating for those who are suddenly without a job, skilled communicators and talented leaders can carry an effective message forward.
Keep in mind you have the chance to demonstrate to remaining employees, the media, and other key audiences the standards by which you operate. You can underscore your culture and communicate the facts at the same time. Tis the season to sneak in one more networking mixer with your favorite PR pals! Join us for a North Seattle mixer on Wednesday, Dec. 10th, 4-5:30pm, at Watershed Pub in Northgate. ❄️ ⭐️ More information and RSVP at: https://lnkd.in/gRZvtpm5

Annie has been selected as the 2025 PRSA Puget Sound PR Professional of the Year! We’ll learn more about Annie and her incredible journey at the 2025 PRSA Puget Sound Summit Awards, but I want to share a note from her nomination. “From rodeo queen to agency owner, Annie Alley is a natural-born PR leader. Whether she’s crafting a killer strategic marketing and communications plan, inspiring her teams to pursue their passions and level-up their PR prowess, or building deep client relationships and giving back to her community –... We’re also thrilled to announce this year’s Summit Awards emcee, Emmy winning host and reporter Saint Bryan from KING 5! Saint will join us August 20 to help commemorate the best-of-the-best of the PR and communications profession in our region.
We have an exciting program planned for you and I personally can’t wait to be together again for this evening of awards, community, and celebration. Do not delay in purchasing your tickets – you don’t want to miss out on this fun! I also want to recognize that for many, the state of the world can be, quite frankly, overwhelming. It is important to remember to take time to prioritize yourself and your mental health when possible. This summer I prioritized live music, good food, and time to completely disconnect without technology. I have said before – as PR and communications professionals we are often first to know, first to have to respond, and the last to be able to process and grieve.
There are a ton of resources out there, but I want to highlight a couple with you that are specific to PR and communications professionals: Muck Rack guided mediation for PR pros; PRSA blog... Most importantly, remember you are not alone and have a community of peers with PRSA and the PRSA Puget Sound Chapter who know all too well the struggles of the profession and can be... I hope to see many of you at the Summit Awards and at one of our upcoming networking mixers. Eric MossPresident, PRSA Puget Sound Chapter PRSA Puget Sound maintains this job listing as a service to the Puget Sound communications community. Job postings are free for communication-focused positions and are listed for 30 days.
