Adam Schefter Has Bad News For Patriots Fans Regarding No 4 Pick
Send this article to your social connections. Send this article to your social connections. If the Patriots are looking to land the sought-after “best player available’ with the No. 4 pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, two of the top talents in this draft class in Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter may not be in the running. Even if New England’s most pressing need on the roster is the vacancy at left tackle, a premier pass-rushing force like Carter or a game-changing playmaker on both sides of the ball inn Hunter... But, such a scenario looks like a long shot for the Patriots.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter has some bad news for Patriots fans still holding onto the dream for New England’s pick at No. 4. With no clear-cut option to fill the Patriots’ biggest needs, New England is in a position to just draft the best available player. With quarterback-needy teams ahead of them in the draft, the best-case scenario was landing Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. In a jam-packed report Monday morning, though, Schefter casually declared the outcome of the three picks preceding the Patriots might be a foregone conclusion at this point. “It’s easy enough to figure out the top picks in this draft,” Schefter wrote.
“Miami quarterback Cam Ward is expected to go to Tennessee with the top pick, while standout Travis Hunter and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter are expected to be gone by New England’s turn... 4.” This isn’t terribly surprising. While the Titans, Browns and Giants all need quarterbacks, it has become increasingly clear the QB class is underwhelming at best. In fact, this tidbit from Schefter speaks to the quality of the available signal-callers. There are plenty of quarterback-needy teams at the top of the 2025 NFL draft.
The Tennessee Titans—picking first—seem inclined to select Miami's Cam Ward, while the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants—picks No. 2 and 3—also have unstable signal-caller situations. Despite this fact, however, a recent quote from ESPN's Adam Schefter on his The Adam Schefter Show podcast suggests that both teams may steer clear from drafting a quarterback with those selections. "It certainly feels like the Cleveland Browns are inclined to look elsewhere, aside from quarterback," he told The Pat McAfee Show's Ty Schmit. "And it's starting to feel like the New York Giants—at No. 3—are starting to look elsewhere, other than quarterback."
The current feeling is that neither the #Browns nor #Giants will select a QB at No. 2 and No. 3, per @AdamSchefter.That means the #Patriots would most likely miss out on Abdul Carter/Travis Hunter.Based on recent comments, I personally think Will Campbell would be the pick. pic.twitter.com/jzEwnycUct Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer shared a similar sentiment on NBC Sports Boston's Early Edition on Tuesday: For a few fleeting moments, New England Patriots fans dared to dream.
A.J. Brown in Foxborough. Drake Maye finally getting the alpha wideout this offense has been missing since the glory days of Randy Moss. A reunion with Mike Vrabel. It felt bold, dramatic—and maybe just crazy enough to work. The buzz started with a cryptic tweet from Patriots radio analyst Paul “Fitzy” Fitzgerald.
He suggested that if Penn State edge Abdul Carter was still on the board at No. 4, the Eagles could place a call to New England. The subtext was clear: A.J. Brown might be in play. After all, Brown has never hidden his love for the Patriots or his respect for Vrabel. And if Philly believed Carter was their next Micah Parsons?
Maybe, just maybe, they’d make a deal. That dream got squashed the moment Adam Schefter stepped in to bring everyone back to reality: “Contrary to internet speculation, the Eagles are not trading A.J. Brown,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday. “The star wide receiver signed a three-year extension a year ago this week.” So much for that.
While the theory had some merit—Brown’s contract, Philly’s potential interest in a blue-chip pass rusher, his connection to Vrabel—it was always more fantasy than fact. Brown is still just 27, coming off another 1,000-yard season, and played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl run. He’s a franchise cornerstone, not trade bait. What Boston really cares about right now. The Patriots may not be able to draft either Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter when they land on the clock.
ESPN analyst Adam Schefter doesn't see Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter being available when the New England Patriots come up on the draft board at No. 4. He recently appeared on "NFL Live" and stated his case.
“It’s not gonna happen. Abdul Carter is going to go before the New England Patriots pick at four," said Schefter. "It would be an upset right now if Abdul Carter made his way to number four. I would handicap Abdul Carter right now, as the likely pick at number two, today.” Carter would immediately become another weapon for an already-loaded Patriots defense. He is coming off a season that saw him record 68 tackles, 12 sacks, 23.5 tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles.
He's an explosive playmaker who could be too good for the three teams ahead of the Patriots on the draft board to pass up. The New England Patriots own the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft, and they are definitely hoping to come away with Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. Unfortunately for the Patriots, it doesn't look like that's going to happen. ESPN's Adam Schefter has provided a big NFL Draft update this week, noting that both Hunter and Carter are expected to be off the board by the time New England is on the clock.
4.” While this isn't exactly surprising, it is obviously not the news Pats fans want to hear considering that both Hunter and Carter are viewed as generational talents. Of course, that begs the question: what will the Patriots do at No. 4 if their two top targets are gone? The most apparent move would be rolling with LSU tackle Will Campbell, as New England is still in need of a blindside protector for Drake Maye. The Tennessee Titans hold the No.
1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Fourth in the draft order are the New England Patriots. With the Titans looking to possibly draft someone other than a quarterback, where does that leave the Pats three spots down? “[The Titans] are not locked in to taking a quarterback at [No.] 1. That is not what New England wanted to hear,” ESPN insider Ada Schefter said, via WEEI Afternoons.
