The move by President Trump to activate nearly 2,000 guardsmen marked the first time since 1965 that a president has deployed a state’s National Guard without a request from that state’s governor. The decision was met with stern rebukes from state and local officials, including Gov. Gavin Newsom who said the deployment was “not to meet an unmet need, but to manufacture a crisis.” LOS ANGELES -- Tensions in Los Angeles escalated Sunday as thousands of protesters took to the streets in response to President Donald Trump's extraordinary deployment of the National Guard, blocking off a major freeway... Many protesters dispersed as evening fell and police declared an unlawful assembly, a precursor to officers moving in and making arrests of people who don't leave.

Some of those remaining threw objects at police from behind a makeshift barrier that spanned the width of a street and others hurled chunks of concrete, rocks, electric scooters and fireworks at California Highway... Officers ran under an overpass to take cover. The tactical alert was canceled at 2:40 a.m. Monday -- 12 hours after it was issued. Police said there were no active closures in downtown Los Angeles as of 4 a.m. There are more rallies planned for Monday.

Immigration raids in Los Angeles on the afternoon of June 6 sparked a small protest. The next day, larger protests began in the town of Paramount, just south of Los Angeles, linked to rumors of a possible immigration raid. Towards evening on June 7, President Donald Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard members to the area. That night, protesters threw rocks, bottles, and fireworks at officers. Later that same night, local police declared a small part of downtown Los Angeles an unlawful assembly area, and large numbers of protesters were cleared from the site. Homeland Security agents detained several people outside a Home Depot just west of downtown Los Angeles on Friday morning.

A little later in the morning, another raid took place at an Ambiance clothing store in LA's Fashion District in downtown. During that operation, people gathered around to photograph and video the officers. A few protesters also arrived. "This is a serious breach of state sovereignty," Gov. Gavin Newsom said. The spate of protests, which have seen both peaceful marches and violent clashes with law enforcement, prompted the president to call in the military. The decision by President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard and Marines over the objections of local and state leaders has also set off a war of words between Trump and Los Angeles... The president has publicly called Bass and Newsom "incompetent" in the crisis, and the mayor and governor have countered that Trump is abusing the power of the Oval Office by sending in the military... Roybal Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, have devolved into violent clashes with local law enforcement firing less-lethal projectiles, tear gas and flash bangs to disperse crowds. Demonstrators have responded by blocking a major freeway, setting vehicles ablaze and hurling rocks, Molotov cocktails and other projectiles at the police, authorities said. LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- President Trump is calling for even more expanded deportation operations in several major cities across the country, including Los Angeles. Trump in a social media posting called on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials "to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History."

The moves comes after large protests erupted in L.A. and other major cities against the Trump administration's immigration policies. So far, it's not known how exactly that will impact L.A. But Sunday, at the president's directions, the Department of Homeland Security said it would pause most raids on farms, restaurants and hotels. The Trump administration has continued widespread immigration enforcement activities -- with a reported goal of up to 3,000 deportations per day.
