But with the season spiraling into irrelevancy when much more was expected, some sections of the fan base are already looking ahead to what promises to be a pivotal offseason for general manager Adam... The front-office leader has a significant amount of hard work ahead. Washington has roster holes everywhere you look. Peters' gamble to run it back with most of the squad that achieved so much in 2024 has backfired. The Commanders stood pat at the 2025 trade deadline, which was surprising to most, leaving Peters with only six selections in next year's draft to utilize. Not exactly ideal, but the former San Francisco 49ers executive will have to make the best out of a bad situation. Adam Peters made the aggressive moves needed to potentially keep the Washington Commanders in the Super Bowl hunt during the offseason. Unfortunately, things have not gone as anyone associated with the franchise expected. It's been one disaster after another for the Commanders at the midseason point. Injuries have decimated the roster. Young players expected to progress haven't lived up to their billing.

The NFL's oldest roster looks exactly that — a massive problem holding the team back right now. Peters opted to stand pat at the 2025 trade deadline. Fans were anticipating a couple of outgoings, given the Commanders' slow start this season. But either no suitable interest arrived, or the offers weren't enough for the front-office leader to remove certain players from the equation. The Commanders will move forward with what they have over the second half of 2025. Even so, it's clear that Peters has an awful lot of hard work ahead when the next offseason arrives to get this ambitious project back on track.

The trade deadline saw a flurry of movement from the New York Jets, and a few other teams made some changes as well. With all of that movement, the 2026 NFL draft order has changed. It will still change before the season is over, but if the season were to end today, the Commanders would have the ninth overall pick. If the Commanders continue to lose games, their first-round draft spot will likely change. But the bigger question is, what do the Commanders do with that pick? Going back to the 2020 NFL draft, the Commanders have had 47 picks in total.

Of those 47 picks, 18 remain on the roster, 13 of which were selected in 2024 or 2025. Granted, some of that is because there was a coaching and a general manager change after the 2023 season. The Commanders had a horrible drafting record under former coach/GM Ron Rivera, with none of his four first-round picks still on the roster. Now that Adam Peters is the guy calling the shots, though, it seems like we might get to see rookies develop as they should. This season is essentially over for the Commanders. They will be using their draft picks wisely in 2026.

Currently, they have six total picks for the 2026 NFL draft after losing their second and fourth-round picks in the Laremy Tunsil trade (which was worth it). This draft will be more focused on getting weapons for Jayden Daniels and bolstering the defense to avoid silly losses.
