At the very top, the class is defined by defensive talent, particularly a strong group of edge defenders and a solid crop of wide receivers and cornerbacks who occupy a significant share of the... Overall, this class blends blue-chip defensive playmakers, a deep perimeter talent pool and a more meaningful cluster of quarterbacks worthy of early consideration than last cycle. Editor’s note: The analysis included here comes from Trevor Sikkema’s preseason scouting series, while the rankings themselves have been fully updated.

This analysis is provided to give readers context on how these players were viewed entering the season. It’s officially draft season for over half the NFL, as 18 teams played their final game this past weekend. The playoff bracket is set. Several teams that fell short of the postseason fired their coach and/or general manager on “Black Monday,” if not sooner. Interview requests for their replacements have already been submitted. All the while, the clock keeps ticking toward the 2026 NFL draft, which will be held April 23-25 in Pittsburgh.

The Raiders, by having the worst strength of schedule among the four three-win teams, secured the No. 1 pick on Sunday. The top 18 picks are set. The final 14 will be finalized over the next month-plus. But for those who’ve already moved on to draft season, here’s Sports Illustrated’s prediction of how the first 18 picks will unfold in April. As things stand right now, the New York Giants have the first overall selection, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders, the Tennessee Titans, and the Cleveland Browns. That could make for a fascinating start to the draft.

While the order could change between now and next spring, here is the latest SB Nation mock draft looking at how the first round could play out, with some thoughts on the picks in... 1. New York Jets (via New York Giants): Fernando Mendoza, QB, Indiana Just like we all expected, the Kansas City Chiefs are driving straight toward a Top 10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft... Of course, almost no one saw that coming for the reigning AFC champions, but here we are, and it's just one of the curiosities of the draft in several months. There are the normal bottom-feeders most foresaw having early eyes for the offseason with free agency and the NFL Draft alike, but teams like the Chiefs bottoming out while others such as the Cleveland...

Wins in Week 17 for the Browns and Saints didn't move them outside the Top 10, but it did push them down a bit further. And the Miami Dolphins also fell out of the Top 10 picks as well, but did so while Quinn Ewers is catching some eyes as a potential option for 2026 at quarterback. That and so much more is already in consideration for the draft. But for now, let's take a look at where we stand with the draft order before diving quickly into a mock draft for the 10 initial picks in April's proceedings. The Chiefs' loss on Christmas Day night is the one that really catches your eye looking at the draft order, as Kansas City hasn't been even within shouting distance of a Top 10 pick... How they handle that will be fascinating.

Equally as intriguing will be what the Browns do if they're now blocked out from their initial needs in the draft after moving outside of the Top 5, and if teams like the Saints... But perhaps more pressingly, the Giants defeating the Raiders handily on Sunday gives Las Vegas the No. 1 overall pick. Not only does that shake up the draft order, but it creates a fascinating position for the Giants. With the first overall pick, they could've very well made a blockbuster trade down. Will they be able to with the second overall pick, though?

Having said that, Vegas isn't locked into No. 1. If the Raiders were to beat Kansas City in Week 18 while the Giants lose to the Cowboys, New York would be back in that spot. But several teams have fallen off the playoff watchlist, meaning they can start digging in deeper on the 2026 NFL Draft class. With six weeks to go in the regular season, The Athletic’s NFL Simulator now gives the Tennessee Titans a 46 percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick for a second consecutive draft, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders (17 percent) and New York Jets (15 percent). We take a look at how the top 10 picks could unfold. Reese has split his time almost evenly between playing in the box and on the edge this season, and he’s been equally destructive across the board. This is the 2026 NFL Draft’s best Micah Parsons clone.

The data is limited, but Reese’s ceiling looks incredible. Trading 2026 rookie picks feels like a roll of the dice. Will next year be a strong skill position class? Will certain be positions be stronger or weaker? Analysts will spout off about the strengths and weaknesses of a class, but putting it in context of other positions helps predict draft capital. Plus many of those analysts haven't even watched these players.

Next year will mark the 23rd NFL Draft I have scouted and covered. I've been producing seven-round mock drafts and rankings since 2004. Anyone can sling out a new mock draft. I bring top-10 accuracy in Big Board projection (better than Mel Kiper, Daniel Jeremiah, and Lance Zierlein). I've even won the contest twice (only seven people have ever been multi-year winners). It may not be the quarterback class we'd hoped for, but it still looks like a step up from last year.

After that, though, there aren't a ton of position groups I'd call "loaded" relative to recent expectations. It's part of why we've already seen so many teams feel comfortable unloading their first-rounders. That doesn't mean there isn't talent to be had, however. It simply means scouts are going to have to work overtime to parse through a less clear-cut draft order than we've seen in recent years. If you're looking for position groups with quality depth -- even if they aren't traditionally drafted highly -- interior offensive line and linebacker are where I'd start. There are 13 interior offensive linemen and nine linebackers represented in the top 100 below, both large numbers compared to the typical yearly crop that goes in the top three rounds.

With that context in mind, let's dive into how the class stacks up in early November. Bain is putting together the best season for a defensive end at the collegiate level since Aidan Hutchinson. Like Hutchinson, Bain isn't a cookie-cutter edge prospect. The Hurricanes defender has a defensive tackle build with shorter arms than ideal on the edge. It's no matter -- he already has 44 pressures this season. Woods has been on scouting radars since he was a true freshman.

He's as powerful a true junior defensive tackle as you'll see and won't turn 21 until a month before the draft. He'll be even more disruptive in the pros than he is in Clemson's defense.
