Biggest need: Quarterback. The Raiders haven't drafted a quarterback in the first round since JaMarcus Russell in 2007. That could very well change in April. The decision to bring in Geno Smith with the expectation that he could deliver instant success didn't work. He threw a league-high 17 interceptions, and at 35, he is not getting any younger. If the Raiders are serious about building for the future -- or in general manager John Spytek's words, "sustained success" -- that means bringing in a young quarterback.
--Ryan McFadden NEW YORK — Jan. 5, 2026 — The Las Vegas Raiders hold the No. 1 pick in the 2026 National Football League Draft, which is scheduled for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh. The tentative order of the first round was announced today by the NFL, subject to the results of the playoffs. The draft order is determined by the following procedures:
(A) The winner of the Super Bowl game selects last and the loser selects next-to-last in all rounds, regardless of the record of the clubs in the regular season. (B) The losers of the Conference Championship games select 29th and 30th in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing. With only three more games left to play in this NFL season, only four spots remain to be finalized in the 2026 NFL Draft order. The first 28 picks are set after the conclusion of the NFL playoffs' divisional round. Four more spots got locked into place last weekend as the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans were locked into spots 25-28, respectively, after their losses in the divisional round. No teams have traded any first-round picks since the end of the regular season, so the top of the draft order looks the same as it did after Week 18.
Here's a closer look at the 2026 NFL Draft order, including which team owns the top pick, which player is projected to go No. 1 overall and more: The Las Vegas Raiders own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. It's the first time the Raiders have had the top pick since their move to Las Vegas before the 2020 season. The last time the team had the No.
1 overall pick was in the 2007 NFL Draft, when the Raiders drafted quarterback JaMarcus Russell out of LSU. The Raiders have lost 10 straight games, including in Week 17 game against the Giants. Steve Marcus / Getty Images Whether or not it was an official attempt to “tank,” the Las Vegas Raiders didn’t put up much of a fight in a 34-10 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. That result puts the Raiders firmly in line to land the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
With one week remaining in the regular season, we actually know the top seven teams in the draft order, although there still could be some shuffling among that group. The order for picks 19-32 will be decided by playoff results — teams eliminated in the wild-card round will be placed into slots 19-24; divisional-round losers will hold picks 25-28, and so on. (Current playoff teams are designated by asterisks below.) The first tiebreaker for draft positioning is strength of schedule, with the team that’s faced an easier schedule receiving the higher pick. Week 18 outcomes locked the 2026 NFL Draft Top 10, with Las Vegas first and the Jets moving up to No. 2 thanks to the Giants' win over the Cowboys. With nearly the entire 2025 NFL regular season in the books, the Top 10 in the 2026 NFL Draft is set.
The Las Vegas Raiders clinched the top pick Sunday when the New York Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18, even though the Raiders beat the Chiefs. The New York Jets moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 thanks to their loss to the Buffalo Bills coupled with the Giants' win. The only other time the Raiders had the No. 1 pick in the draft, they selected quarterback JaMarcus Russell in 2007.
They're hoping they don't repeat history with that disastrous selection. The same is true for the Jets, who took quarterback Zach Wilson with the No. 2 pick in 2021, the only other time the team held the No. 2 pick in the past 35 years. The Las Vegas Raiders secured the No. 1 pick and the Jets jumped to No.
2 as the Top 10 in the 2026 NFL Draft is set after Week 18 results. The Arizona Cardinals lost to the Los Angeles Rams and moved up from No. 5 entering Week 18 to No. 3. Arizona benefited from the Giants' loss plus a change in the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker that jumped the Cardinals ahead of the Tennessee Titans. This weekend at the Cubs Convention, everyone said all the right things about the Chicago Cubs' theoretical infield overload, with Alex Bregman coming in to be the starting third baseman, Nico Hoerner holding down...
That's the approach that makes for the best 2026 roster, and it's the way things are expected to go as we sit here today. That said,... As 2026 continues to look more and more like an "all-in" season for the Chicago Cubs, we cannot discount the possibility of more additions to the 2026 roster this offseason. Logically, of course, that makes sense. But even more reassuringly, both President Jed Hoyer and GM Carter Hawkins have indicated as much, even suggesting that - for once - paying the luxury tax isn't a concern or impediment to any... We know that Alex Bregman's deal with the Chicago Cubs is for five years, is nominally worth $175 million, has a reported $70 million in deferrals, and comes with a no-trade clause.
Now we know a little more on the particulars there: Details on deferred $ in Alex Bregman deal:$70 million of $175M is deferred ($15M in 2026 & 2029, $10M in 2027 & 2028, $20M... Were it not for an Achilles tear at the end of July, 32-year-old righty reliever Trent Thornton might not have been available in free agency at all, much less available on a minor league... He'd had a slow start to the season in the Mariners' bullpen to be sure, but he'd been dominating since mid-June, and he had been a really good reliever in 2023 and 2024 (3.13... You may recall back in December that there were significant rumors about the Chicago Cubs' interest in Zac Gallen, a free agent starter coming off a down season but with a long track record... It's a type the Cubs sure do like. And, when the Cubs missed out on Tatsuya Imai, the Gallen rumors ticked right back up.
But, with the Cubs having traded for Edward... The Las Vegas Raiders secured the No. 1 overall pick after going 3-14. Behind them, there are more than a dozen teams looking to change their fortunes heading into next season. Four teams are still playing in the postseason, but 28 can start preparing for the offseason. Four more teams were eliminated from Super Bowl contention in the divisional round, which officially means the top-24 picks of the 2026 NFL Draft are set.
