JB Pritzker suggested Wednesday that Illinois Democrats could revisit redistricting if neighboring Indiana moves to redraw its congressional boundaries, according to the Chicago Tribune. “We’re watching what Indiana does,” Pritzker told reporters.

“Donald Trump is trying to cheat, so we may have to react to that.” Speaking after an Election Night of Democrat wins in blue states and cities, Pritzker said the results showed voters rejecting Trump’s “authoritarian” leadership and economic policies. Indiana’s Republican Gov. Mike Braun has called a special session for Dec. 1 to consider a new map, a move Pritzker said could push Illinois to follow suit despite his opposition to partisan redistricting. USA TODAY will have live coverage from key states as Virginia and New Jersey voters are picking new governors, and Californians will decide on a major redistricting push on Election Day.

All of the races could signal how voters are feeling about President Donald Trump and their mood heading into the 2026 midterms. Democratic U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger won control of the Virginia governor's mansion from the GOP in a contest against Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.

Republican Jack Ciattarelli is making his third bid for governor in New Jersey after losing by just three percentage points in 2021. The former state lawmaker faces off against Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill. California, meanwhile, votes on the Proposition 50 ballot measure pushed by Democrats that would allow state leaders to temporarily bypass an independent redistricting commission and draw a new House map. Democrats want to draw more seats in California that favor their party after Texas created more GOP-leaning seats.

Twas the night of the Election, in District 88,As campaign signs dotted lawns, voters stayed up late. The mailers were read, the debates now long done,As neighbors weigh choices, the final countdown has begun. The polls are now open, the ballots stand ready,With turnout, the question (it's gonna suck), and nerves not quite steady. From porches and kitchens, from phones glowing bright,Folks checked one last headline before voting tonight. The candidates waited, their messages sent,Hoping weeks of hard work would soon pay a dividend.Every knock on a door, every flyer and call,Now rests with the voters; the most crucial step of all. So here in South Carolina, as the Palmetto moon glows,Candidates Hightower and Lastinger are ready to go.By tonight's end, the picture becomes clear. Twas the night of the Election… and a decision will soon be here. A year after former Vice President Kamala Harris suffered an electoral beating by President Donald Trump, Democrats across the country – from Virginia to California – notched major victories in a sign of growing...

In Virginia, a state with thousands of federal workers affected by the government shutdown and Department of Government Efficiency cuts, Abigail Spanberger soundly defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome-Earle Sears, reports say. In New Jersey, which last year saw hoards of voters move toward Trump, projections say Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill won against Republican businessman Jack Ciattarelli. Next door, in New York City, voters chose progressive Zohran Mamdani and his affordability platform over the more centrist former Democratic New York Gov.

Andrew Cuomo. And in California, voters overwhelmingly supported Gov. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting referendum allowing the state legislature to redo congressional maps and add up to five new Democratic-leaning seats ahead of the 2026 election. Trump kept his distance from the races this year, never having stepped on the campaign trail for any of his party’s contenders, though he still loomed on voter’s minds. Democrats' sweeping victories come as a troubling sign for the president and his party. A handful of state contests on Tuesday will offer an early test of how Americans are feeling less than a year into President Donald Trump's second term.

As the government shutdown nears the record for longest ever, Trump is showing his support for Republican gubernatorial candidates during tele-rallies, and is sending election monitors to high-stakes votes in New Jersey and California. Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders are stumping for Democratic candidates who represent different ideological factions but share core kitchen-table economic messages. There are only two off-year gubernatorial elections this fall, and they're both seen as bellwethers for next year's midterm elections. The results of the governors' races in Virginia and New Jersey may serve as a referendum on the president's first 10 months in office. A lesser known trio of votes for Democratic justices on the state Supreme Court in swing state Pennsylvania could eventually decide the fate of election laws, redistricting and abortion. In New York, Zohran Mamdani has vaulted from relatively unknown state legislator to being the frontrunner for mayor in the largest city in the U.S., while drawing frequent attacks from Trump.
