Multiple elections occurred on November 4, 2025, with primary elections held on August 5, 2025. 9 of the 147 state legislative seats were up for special election in 2025 as a result of deaths and resignations among members, 5 in the Senate and 4 in the House. All nine elections are in the Seattle area. Two special elections to the Washington Court of Appeals took place in November 2025.

If there is a vacancy in the Washington State Legislature, the board of county commissioners where the vacant seat is located has the responsibility to select a replacement.

The county central committee of the political party that last held the seat must submit a list of three candidates to the board of county commissioners representing the vacant district. If the vacancy occurs in the office of a joint senator or joint representative, the state central committee is responsible for submitting the list of three candidates. A selection must be made within 60 days after the vacancy occurred. The person appointed will hold the seat until his or her successor is elected at the next general or special election in November.[1] Voters can register and update their address through 8pm on Election Day. Therefore, the total number of registered voters may change daily.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Voters throughout Washington state will decide on key measures that will impact their communities during the April 22 special election. That includes fire district mergers, levy and bond approval for school district improvement projects, continued investment in road improvement projects and more. An initial round of election returns is expected to be released shortly after 8 p.m. on Election Day.

These returns are from ballots that were turned in early. Counties will release additional results in the days after the election. Additional results are typically released daily. Voters within the Enumclaw School District will vote on a capital projects levy. Money from the raised taxes would help the district renovate, replace and improve existing facilities. If approved, the four-year levy would provide up to $3 million a year for projects between 2026 and 2029.

Ballots will be mailed April 4th. Please expect them to arrive in your mailbox no later than April 10th. Starting April 15th, only in-person registrations are allowed to register and receive a ballot for the April 22, 2025 Special Election. OLYMPIA — County elections offices throughout Washington have mailed ballots to eligible voters in 23 counties participating in the April 22 Special Election. Approximately 43% of Washington’s more than 5 million registered voters will have the opportunity to cast a ballot in the special election. Statewide, ballots will include 39 total measures across 39 districts, with races including school districts, fire districts, and hospitals. Voters participating in the April Special Election must return their ballots by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22. Ballots can be returned by mail, placed in an official county ballot drop box, or delivered in person to a county voting center.

Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Election Day. The United States Postal Service recommends mailing your ballot at least a week before Election Day to ensure it is postmarked on time. “The April Special Election includes measures related to critical services and infrastructure, such as fire districts and hospitals, giving voters a chance to help shape their communities,” Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said. “Voting in special elections is one of many ways you can make a difference at a local level, and our office works with county elections officials to ensure voting is safe, secure, and accessible... Eligible individuals still have time to register to vote in the April Special Election. The deadline for mail-in and online registrations and updates to be received is Monday, April 14.

Voters may also register or update their registration in person at their county elections office until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
