2024 nfl draft best picks trades qb fits and predictions

The 2024 NFL Draft is almost here, delivering one of the biggest events in sports of the year. Before the mock drafts and rumors come to an end on April 2024, we’re making final 2024 NFL Draft predictions for things that could happen on Thursday. There is no suspense with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as the Chicago Bears are picking Caleb Williams. Once the Washington Commanders are put on the clock, though, the suspense begins and it will carry over through Round 1 and into the weekend for the final two days. Let’s dive into our bold 2024 NFL Draft predictions. There’s very little doubt that quarterbacks will be the first three picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, it just comes down to which passers and what teams draft them.

Williams is going to Chicago and the Washington Commanders are choosing between Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels. Despite recent smoke pointing to Maye, we’re sticking with our belief that the Commanders draft the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. Ultimately, we’re convinced the New England Patriots stand pat, choosing Maye to be the face of their franchise then using the rest of the draft to build around him. Related: NFL Draft records that could be broken in 2024 Last week, we saw 257 names called in the 2024 NFL draft, as teams filled out their classes and tackled big needs. Some front offices did better than others -- the Eagles and Steelers stood out to me -- but how did the individual picks stack up across all seven rounds?

I ranked the best 100 selections. This isn't just a list of the most talented players -- we did that before the draft. Instead, we are incorporating a bit more into the equation than just what each prospect put on tape. As such, 41 picks from Day 3 made the list, but I didn't have all of the top-10 selections in there. To create our ranking, we factored in value (where a player was drafted vs. where he was ranked pre-draft), scheme fit, how the selection addressed a need, what the prospect brings on the field and whether additional assets were gained or lost in draft-day trades to acquire him.

Which picks crack the top 10? What moves from Rounds 4-7 make the list? And which teams dominated with multiple highly ranked selections? Let's stack the best 100 picks of the 2024 draft, starting with a pair of them from one team. Note: When each player was selected is listed by Round-Pick in parentheses. Jump to the best pick in each round: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

What an opening night of the 2024 NFL draft. We saw three wild records for the common draft era, with six quarterbacks in the top 12, zero defensive players until the Colts took edge rusher Laiatu Latu at No. 15 and 23 offensive players in total in Round 1. Seven receivers tied the 2004 record, and eight offensive tackles tied the 2008 record. And we somehow didn't see a defensive back until Quinyon Mitchell went to the Eagles at No. 22.

Five teams also made a trade up the board for a player, including the Vikings moving up one spot to land quarterback J.J. McCarthy. So ... a pretty action-packed evening in Detroit. With all 32 first-round picks behind us, let's debate the best and worst of an exciting opening night. NFL draft analysts Matt Miller, Jordan Reid and Field Yates answered 12 of the biggest lingering questions, including which picks were great value, questionable reaches and perfect solutions to huge needs.

Which trades stood out? Which QBs landed with ideal teams? What are our biggest mock draft regrets? And which playmakers are locks for huge rookie seasons? We also took a quick look ahead to Day 2, as the second round will get underway Friday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN/ABC/ESPN App).

But first, here's our snap reaction to Day 1. After a year of anticipation, the 2024 NFL Draft is finally here. With that in mind, let’s take one last try at projecting all 32 first-round picks with a final 2024 mock draft. It’s hard to remember the last prospect who went coast to coast as the consensus top player in a class.

Was it Jadeveon Clowney in 2014? Jameis Winston in 2015? Either way, Caleb Williams will break that trend when the Bears officially make him this year’s No. 1 pick as Chicago looks to finally land a franchise quarterback. Despite Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye largely being viewed as on an even playing field as prospects, the consensus has seemingly been that Washington will take the former with the No. 2 pick.

I’ll stick with that here, as it’s easy to envision the reigning Heisman Trophy winner finding instant success in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense. This might be the easiest pick in the draft. Unless the Patriots trade down, one would imagine they’ll be taking whoever’s still available between Daniels and Drake Maye. In this instance, that happens to be Maye as New England takes its second swing on a first-round quarterback in the post-Tom Brady era. After months of over-analyzation, rampant speculation, and rumors running amok, the 2024 NFL Draft is finally here. This year’s class features one of the deepest pools of quarterbacks we’ve seen in years, with the expectation we could see all sorts of trades in the Top 10 Thursday night.

I’m no draft guru, but even the best experts whiff on plenty of pre-draft predictions. A year ago, I nailed multiple Day 1 predictions. So let’s join in the fun again this year, and offer some takes on what might happen over the next three days in Detroit. Here’s seven bold predictions for the 2024 NFL Draft: Part 1 of this prediction isn’t overly bold if you believe Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix will slide into the 1st Round at some point Thursday night.

The 2024 NFL Draft had a record six first-round quarterbacks. Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy and Bo Nix all went from No. 1 to No. 12 overall. Going into the 2025 season, all six are starting in Week 1 and are joined by one more second-year QB, the New Orleans Saints' Spencer Rattler, a fifth-round pick.

But with how some of those quarterbacks performed last season and considering upside expectations for this season, should they have gone in a different order to different teams, including those who didn't take a... If Sporting News were picking again today, here's how those half-dozen passers would be redrafted: Where he went: No. 2 overall to Washington Commanders
