20 Book Ideas For Early Math Pinterest
This series of book ideas encourage using stories to infuse the early years with mathematical learning. From the infant years until they are putting together more advanced numeracy concepts in elementary school, books can be a gateway for early math discussions. Below find all the resources we have placed in our series titled BOOK IDEAS. We find that one sure fire way to warm up children’s attitude towards mathematics is to build math activities and lessons out of the books they all love to read. When we start to sort through books that could be used in this way, three categories emerge. Measurement is a topic with a lot of early math big ideas and books are wonderful portals to explore them.
Plus, children’s books provide an easy platform for repeated, playful conversation. When reading books about… Counting books that offer children opportunities to participate bring play into math learning. These books engage children physically, cognitively, and emotionally—making them favorites that children will ask to read again and again. Math is so much fun and means so much more to little ones when it concretely builds understanding. So many times, we skip over “the tough stuff” because we think our little people can’t handle it.
Below are a few activities I have done with my five-year-old to begin building two of the “tough” concepts – division and logic. Here’s a very simple, engaging early math activity for understanding fair shares and beginning division concepts using The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. <img decoding="async" height="404" src="https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61JTHweeOkL.jpg" alt="The Doorbell Rang" width="500" style="max-width:none;border:0;height:auto;width:100%;margin:9.6% 0"> Gather a pile of 12 “friends”. These could be bear counters (like we’ve used), stuffed animals, plastic people, or whatever other toys you have handy. Gather 12 pieces of food.
We’ve used M&M’s (because they were handy), but you could use anything – cookies, cereal pieces, crackers, grapes, popcorn – ANYTHING that your child will enjoy as a snack after the activity. 20 Math Pinners and Boards to Follow on Pinterest Pinterest has become a teacher’s new best friend. While you can search for nearly any math skill or topic and find a wealth of ideas, you can also get inspiration by following the right pinners and boards. Rather than only finding ideas for the current lesson you’re teaching, you can fill your main Pinterest feed with ideas to save for the future, articles you want to read, and other cool resources... Not only do these awesome pinners and board pin a lot, they also pin high-quality, creative math resources.
Nearly everything these pinners post is centered around math or education, making almost all of their boards relevant to the math classroom. 21st Century Math Projects focuses on pinning modern math projects to help relate to students’ current interests. For example, you may find CSI-style lessons or lessons related to the Oscars and other Hollywood events. Most resources are geared towards the middle and high school levels, with some math funnies and freebies geared towards all math teachers. Math-U-See is a homeschool math curriculum company that incorporates videos and manipulative into its lessons. Many of the pins support and reference the Math-U-See curriculum.
