How to choose the best reads of the year? Of the over one hundred books I read last year, these are my top ten reads of 2024. Last year, I read 129 books. While far from a record year, it feels like a decent count given my job as a book reviewer. With all those books, it can be hard to keep my full 2024 reading list straight. However, my top reads of the year had something that made them stand out.
Each of these books touched me in a way – making me thinking about life, past and future. And because I can never settle on just ten, I threw in a few honorable mentions that were so close to making the list. Enjoy the list and let me know what you think in the comments. Welcome back. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. 2024 was an excellent reading year for me, and also quite a lovely year in general.
I took all pressure from myself by not subscribing to any reading challenges, as I explained in last week’s post, and found that I picked up a lot of excellent books, all on a... I read, and listened to, some wonderful books, and have somehow managed to narrow it down to just ten. Some of these were releases by my all-time favourite authors, and others were the first book which I’d tried from a particular author. And yes, all of my favourites from the year were written by women (not deliberate, but also not a surprise to me!). ‘The first of two new, interconnected novels from bestselling, award-winning, Booker-Prize shortlisted author Ali Smith. Following her dazzling five-novel portrait of our age, the ‘Seasonal’ sequence, Ali Smith returns with the first of two novels which belong together but can be read independently.
Gliff –a Scots or Northern word for a glimpse, a shock, a glance – will not only tell its own story but also contain within it a hidden story, to be revealed only in... In form and feeling, Gliff will light a new, fabular and fabulist path for Ali Smith and for us through the gathering darkness of our chaotic times.’ My Good Bright Wolf by Sarah Moss (2024) I had a goal of 60 books this year and read 88. Knowing I was going to have a baby in the middle of the year, I was unsure of how much reading I would do. I gave birth July 5th and finished one book that month.
I relied heavily on streaming shows and movies instead. Around mid-August, shows lost their luster, and I found the brain capacity to read again. My Kindle was essential for nursing, not only for it’s portability and lack of paper pages to turn, but for the night mode feature so I could read in the dark. I also started going to my local library more. For as small of a town as I live in, it is quite the active establishment thanks to the current director and her efforts to keep filling the shelves with popular titles. By the end of the year, I was reading more physical books due to more frequent library visits and my generous grandmother.
As for audiobooks…I thought I would rely on them even more after I became a mom, but I’ve found it harder to work them in. Sometimes I’ll pop an ear bud in on a walk or listen to them when I drive, but I also have so many podcasts I’d like to listen to that I’d rather reserve those... My goal for 2025 is 72 books. This may seem like an arbitrary number, but it’s the amount of books I can log on four pages of my planner (an A5 dotted journal). I achieved 60 books so easily last year that I feel I can achieve 72. I’ve been adding to my TBR (to be read) list at a slower pace than ever, so my focus will be the physical books sitting on my shelf and at the library.
I’m sure I’ll treat myself to another month of Kindle Unlimited once a few of my Libby holds come up to borrow (or a new Bellingwood book comes out - I’m a still a... I still have about 20 weeks to go for those, so I should have plenty of time to work through the hoard I currently have downloaded! In no particular order, here are my top ten of read of 2024, all of which I granted 5-stars (meaning I would reread and highly recommend): I don’t know about you, but the new year brings with it a renewed excitement to explore my ever-increasing TBR. But before we talk about our expectations for the 2025 reading journey, let’s explore what we read in 2024. And as always, we only discuss our favorite books and why we loved them.
Because the purpose of this space is to share book recommendations. It’s not about the books we disliked. Why discuss that which we will never recommend to others? So, let’s start with the top ten books of 2024. Don’t forget to share your favorite reads of the year in the comments. And if you share on social media, tag me @rebelliousbookworm or @fizza_reads.
It’s a magical story set in 1906. Marietta Stelle loves ballet more than anything else in the world. She wants to continue living her dream, but society dictates otherwise. After Christmas, she must marry a suitable man and take her place in society, a prospect she dreads. Drosselmeier is their new neighbor. He wins over all of her family, yet she can see the calculating man that he is.
When she rejects his advances, his mask falls. To escape him, Marietta enters an enchanted woods. Unwittingly, she becomes a prisoner of a sadistic king, Gelum. With the help of her fellow prisoners, she must free herself and others. And then she must find a way back to her world. The story is whimsical and delightfully unexpected.
Even the dark theme is relayed in a fun and lighthearted manner, making it perfect for readers like me who avoid depressing stories. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and while I can’t say it has the best character development or the most original plotline, I can confirm that it narrates tried-and-true masterfully. My only problem with this book was that it ended too soon. It’s the type of story you want never to finish. The characters are amazing and character development is exceptional. Every twist and turn gives you more insight into the characters’ motivation.
The story flows beautifully and the author has used magical realism masterfully. All in all, it’s a perfect story with both contemporary and historical elements, making it perfect for a wider audience. We love a good book and looking back on the past year, we definitely had some favorites. From life-changing non-fiction to captivating novels, these are our top 10 reads of 2024. A perfect blend of storytelling and inspiration, we loved this read. A modern classic in the self-help space, Atomic Habits is all about how small changes can lead to massive improvements. James Clear breaks down the science of habit formation into actionable steps, making this an empowering read for anyone looking to improve their life one small habit at a time. We have our own guide on how to hack your habits, and many of the lessons came from this book. Less of a novel and more of a visual reference, this book reads like a physical Instagram feed. Beautifully Organized is a dream for anyone looking to declutter and elevate their living spaces.
Nikki Boyd’s tips are practical yet inspiring, and the photography alone is enough to spark a major home refresh. Perfect for those who love a mix of organization and design. We’ve recommended the Emotional Intelligence series from the Harvard Business Review many times. These books are super short but packed with insights. Self-Awareness is a thought-provoking dive into how understanding yourself can unlock your best life. If you’re curious about any of our other top picks in this series, you can check them out here.
