Nobody Expected What This Espn Analyst Just Said About Jayden Daniels
Some people just have a hard time admitting when they're wrong. In the lead-up to the 2024 NFL Draft, all the commotion was about whether the Washington Commanders should select Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye as their quarterback of the future with the No. 2 overall pick. Suffice it to say, they chose correctly. Don't tell ESPN's Ben Solak, though. In his article titled "100 things to know for the 2025 season, 100 days out", he claims that Maye might still be better.
Solak makes a fair point, albeit contentiously. It's hard to gauge just how high Maye's ceiling might be at this point in his career, given how horrible the New England Patriots were last season. They figure to be much improved in 2025, particularly offensively, thanks to the additions of wide receiver Stefon Diggs and highly touted rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson, all while hiring a proven winner in... Cam Newton doubled down on his criticism of Jayden Daniels, and he’s not backing down from anyone who has a problem with it. The former NFL MVP fired back at ESPN’s Ryan Clark after the longtime analyst questioned whether Newton crossed the line by calling Daniels a potential “one-hit wonder.” With training camp around the corner, Newton made it clear: nobody gets a free pass from his commentary, regardless of their reputation or character.
Newton responded in a recent 4th and 1 video after Clark said the former Panthers quarterback may have gone too far in questioning whether Daniels would be a “one-hit wonder.” Daniels had a standout rookie year, leading the Washington Commanders to the NFC Championship Game and entering the 2025 season surrounded by optimism and scrutiny from Newton. “I respect Ryan Clark, but Ryan Clark’s safe. I’m not,” Newton said in a monologue addressing the criticism. “Nobody is above critique. If you’re playing the game of football or any sport, just because he’s a model citizen, we can’t critique his game?
I find that mighty strange.” Say what you will about the results, but former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton never backed down from a challenge during his NFL career. Newton has taken the same approach in his new role as an analyst and member of the media. Case in point: Cam isn't backing down from his take wondering if Jayden Daniels could be a one-hit wonder QB just like Robert Griffin III. That idea didn't sit well with ESPN analyst Ryan Clark, who called Newton out for what he thought was a bad take based on Daniels' reported superb work ethic. In his latest 4th & 1 podcast, Newton doubled down and made a fair point that having good character is no guarantee of success and we should still be free to critique.
"Nobody is above critique if you play the game of football or any sport. Just because he's a model citizen, we can't critique his game? I find that mighty strange. I still have to do my due diligence and as a member of the media to voice my opinion. Would you? You wanna play it safe?
Safe don't get you nowhere. It gets you cut." Here's the full clip with Newton's comments. Cam Claps Back at Ryan Clark Over Jayden Daniels CommentsHot Take of the Week out now!📺: https://t.co/bobzSgopEl pic.twitter.com/CVDuL4zRNd The Washington Commanders will have to play without young star quarterback Jayden Daniels during their Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury during the team's Week 2 loss on Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers.
There is some concern about Daniels after suffering the injury due to how much he has been getting hit. Add in the fact that the Commanders have a rough history when it comes to dual-threat quarterbacks, and it gets even more concerning. Robert Griffin III saw his career completely derailed by injuries during his time with Washington. Keeping that in mind, a popular ESPN personality has spoken out with an alarming outlook for Daniels. But there’s one “intrusive thought” in particular that may cause a stir when it comes to comparing Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels. It’s one New England Patriots fans should love. Sure, Daniels was the Rookie of the Year in 2024. But Solak thinks that Maye’s performance as a rookie was just as good – if not better. It’s a stance that Solak realizes could have Washington Commanders fans coming out with pitchforks and torches. “Statistically, (Maye) didn’t hold a candle,” Solak wrote.
“But degree of difficulty? Maye was playing a completely different sport. I’ll put it this way and hope metropolitan D.C. doesn’t come for my head: Patriots fans should feel as confident and inspired about their future at quarterback as Commanders fans do right now.” While almost everyone is raving about Jayden Daniels‘ emergence as one of the league’s top quarterbacks, Stephen A. Smith included, there are some who still doubt the Washington Commanders rookie.
Among them is ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky and his take that the QB’s inclusion in the MVP race is an overreaction. Orlovsky recently addressed the growing discussion around Daniels as a potential early MVP candidate in the NFL. While acknowledging the quarterback’s impressive performance during his rookie season with the Commanders, Orlovsky believes it’s premature to place him in the MVP conversation just yet. During a segment on First Take, Orlovsky argued that while Daniels has shown remarkable skills, including a record-setting 82.1% completion rate and seven total touchdowns in just four games, these achievements should be viewed... He pointed out that until Daniels leads his team to victory against a high-caliber opponent, it may be an overreaction to include him in MVP discussions. Orlovsky also said that Daniels needs to face stronger competition and demonstrate consistent excellence against top-tier defenses.
Unlike most opinions about Daniels out there, Orlovsky isn’t convinced Daniels is at the level where other MVP contenders are. His take can be seen in an article written by Paul Harvey for Saturday Down South. Jayden Daniels was taken second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders. Adding a prospect of Daniels’ caliber instantly can turn some franchises around. However, fans outside of Washington D.C. have appeared somewhat slow to jump on the bandwagon.
That said, one ESPN analyst isn’t waiting. Speaking on an episode of NFL Live via JPA Football with a hat tip to Earl Forcey on Twitter/X, analyst Louis Riddick offered high expectations. “Rarely does the ball ever hit the ground… he is going to take that town by storm.” Riddick complimented Daniels’ accuracy based on reports and conversations he had with people who have watched Daniels throw live. Daniels’ ball placement, velocity, and leadership have made the analyst a believer.
